Chapter 1 - The Smoke and the ChoiceBlood was running down my legs, warm and sticky against my skin, but the physical pain was nothing compared to the suffocating agony crushing my chest. Eight months pregnant, heavily swollen and exhausted, I stood trapped inside the second-floor gallery of our burning Miami mansion as thick, toxic black smoke rolled across the imported Italian ceiling tiles.

Glass shattered beneath my bare feet as I stared down the grand staircase into the foyer.

There stood Roman Rinaldi, my billionaire husband.

His dark hair was ruffled, his expensive designer suit jacket abandoned, and his jaw set in that ruthless expression that made Wall Street titans tremble. But he wasn’t looking at me. His arms were wrapped securely around Serena Cross, the woman whose face had plastered every gossip tabloid in South Florida for the last six weeks. He was lifting Serena into his arms, shielding her face from falling debris, preparing to carry her out to safety while I stood alone in the inferno with his unborn son kicking frantically against my ribs.

“Roman!” I screamed, my voice cracking through the smoke. “Roman, look up!”

He froze on the lower landing. His dark eyes darted upward. For a split second, I saw his gaze lock onto mine—onto the blood staining my maternity dress, onto the sheer terror etched across my face.

His lips parted. He took a half-step toward the stairs.

Then Serena groaned, clutching her arm as if in severe pain, burying her face against his chest.

Roman’s jaw clenched. Without another word, he turned his back on me, bolted through the front doors, and carried his rumored mistress out into the cool Miami night, leaving his pregnant wife to burn.

The betrayal hit me harder than the smoke.

Six weeks earlier, my life had felt secure, built on a foundation of deep, unshakable love. To the world, Roman Rinaldi was the untouchable founder of Rinaldi Global Holdings, an empire spanning luxury hotels, international logistics, real estate, and massive construction projects. Corporate executives went dead silent when he entered a room. Yet, behind closed doors, the man who commanded billions was the same man who stood in our kitchen peeling oranges for me because the citrus smell helped soothe my morning sickness.

Then the photographs started appearing.

The first showed Roman leaving the exclusive Marlowe Hotel with Serena Cross, his strong hand pressed firmly against her lower back. Another showed her slipping into the passenger seat of his private town car, and a third captured them dining alone at a secluded corner booth in Brickell, leaning closely toward each other while our baby kicked beneath my ribs.

Within days, Miami’s gossip columns and television talk shows were screaming that my husband had discarded his pregnant wife for a glamorous corporate operative.

When Roman finally came home late that night, I didn't cry. I shoved my glowing phone across the white quartz kitchen island, stopping it right in front of him.

“Are you sleeping with her?” I demanded.

“No.” His answer was immediate, firm, and completely steady.

“Then why does half of Miami think you are?”

He stepped toward me, his boots clicking on the tile. I instinctively stepped back, putting distance between us.

“Because I need them to.”

I stared at him, my breath catching in my throat. “You need people to think you're cheating on your pregnant wife?”

“She isn't my mistress.”

“But you're letting them humiliate me! Every time I go to a charity gala, women whisper behind my back. Your executives avoid my eyes. My marriage is public entertainment!”

Roman’s jaw tightened so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. “I know.”

That answer almost broke my control. My hands trembled, but I swallowed the lump of rage burning my throat. “And you're still doing it? Why, Roman? Tell me why.”

His expression hardened into stone. “Victor Kane.”

The name hung in the kitchen air like a curse. Everyone in South Florida knew Victor Kane. He was a ruthless, predatory billionaire investor notorious for swallowing vulnerable companies through shell corporations, malicious lawsuits, financial pressure, and industrial espionage.

“He's coming after Rinaldi Global,” Roman explained, his voice dropping into a dangerous register. “Serena used to work as a senior analyst inside his inner circle. She still has access to people and servers inside his organization.”

My stomach tightened into a knot. “So the affair... it's all fake?”

“If Kane believes Serena compromised me, he'll think my attention is divided and my marriage is crumbling. He’ll think I'm distracted while she helps me uncover what he's planning to hit us with.”

I should have felt relieved. I should have wrapped my arms around him and told him we would beat Kane together.

Instead, Roman went frighteningly quiet. The silence stretched between us, heavy and unnatural.

“There’s more,” he whispered.

“Tell me, Roman. What else?”

For the first time since I had met him—across boardrooms, hostile takeovers, and billion-dollar corporate wars—I saw something in my husband's eyes that terrified me.

Fear.

“Victor isn't only investigating my company,” Roman said, his voice barely audible over the hum of the refrigerator. “He's investigating our family.”

My hand flew instinctively to my swollen stomach, pressing against our son.

Roman reached inside his jacket and placed a heavy, sealed manila envelope bearing the logo of a high-end private security firm directly onto the counter.

Three stark words were printed across the front in bold black ink:

SURVEILLANCE SUBJECT: MRS. RINALDI.

I looked up from the envelope into my husband's pale, haunted eyes. “Roman... what has he done?”

Before Roman could answer, his cell phone rang on the kitchen counter, cutting through the silence like a gunshot.
