Chapter 7 - The Mother-in-Law’s VerdictEleanor Rinaldi didn't speak for a long, uncomfortable moment. The air in the VIP suite felt instantly heavy, charged with decades of expectations, class snobbery, and unspoken judgments.

Roman stepped immediately between his mother and the bed, his body language stiffening into a protective barrier.
“Mother,” Roman said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, warning register. “If you are here to start lecturing Elena about public scandals or tabloid headlines, you can turn around right now and walk out that door.”
Eleanor ignored her son entirely. Her dark eyes remained locked onto me, studying my face, tracing the pale exhaustion still lingering from the smoke inhalation and emergency labor, before dropping down to the tiny baby sleeping against my chest.
Slowly, deliberately, Eleanor walked around the side of the bed.
I tightened my grip around Leo, my maternal instincts flaring up instantly. I was no longer the quiet, intimidated wife who swallowed her pride at family dinners; I was a mother who had survived a burning mansion and a billionaire hit squad to protect her child.
“Give him to me,” Eleanor commanded, holding out her manicured hands.
“No,” I said clearly, my voice steady and unyielding.
Eleanor’s eyebrows shot up in genuine shock. No one had spoken to the matriarch of the Rinaldi family like that in forty years.
Before Eleanor could snap back, Roman stepped in. “Mother, Elena decides who holds her son.”
Eleanor stared at her son, then looked back at me. A strange, unreadable expression flickered across her stern face—something resembling grudging, hard-won respect.
Slowly, Eleanor lowered her hands and clasped them together in front of her skirt.
“I did not come here to lecture you, Roman,” Eleanor said, her voice softer than I had ever heard it. She looked directly at me. “When I saw the headlines last week... when I watched television reports showing my son carrying another woman out of a burning house while my pregnant daughter-in-law was trapped inside... I believed the worst. I thought my son had lost his mind.”
I raised my chin. “Your son was protecting us from a monster, Eleanor.”
Eleanor nodded slowly. “I know that now. Federal prosecutors briefed me this morning on the extent of Victor Kane’s conspiracy. They told me how Roman engineered a brilliant, dangerous smokescreen to draw Kane’s fire away from his family... and how you, Elena, played your part in the silence without breaking.”
She stepped closer to the bed, leaning over just enough to look down at the sleeping infant’s face.

“He has Roman’s chin,” Eleanor whispered, her voice cracking ever so slightly. She reached out with one trembling, ring-adorned finger and gently brushed the edge of baby Leo’s blanket. “And your eyes, Elena. Thank God for that.”
The tension in the room instantly evaporated, replaced by a profound, surreal peace. Eleanor Rinaldi had finally given her verdict, and for the first time since I married into her world, I felt like I truly belonged.
