Chapter 5 - The Midnight AmbulanceThe chaos on the terrace multiplied a hundredfold.

“Medic!” Roman roared, his voice cutting through the wailing sirens and shouting police officers. “Get a stretcher here right now! My wife is going into labor!”
Two paramedics with an emergency oxygen kit and a rolling gurney shoved past the police officers, dropping onto the soot-covered deck beside us. They hoisted me onto the stretcher with practiced efficiency, slapping an oxygen mask over my face to clear my lungs of the toxic smoke while strapping me down securely.
“Hold my hand, Roman! Don't you dare let go!” I cried out through the plastic mask, the contractions hitting me in rapid, agonizing waves.
“I’m right here, Elena. I’m not leaving your side for a single second,” Roman promised, his hand locked tightly around mine as the paramedics wheeled me rapidly toward the service elevator.
Miraculously, the backup generator had kicked in, keeping the elevator operational despite the fire below. Within minutes, we were out of the burning mansion and loaded into the back of a speeding Miami-Dade ambulance.
The siren wailed, piercing the damp night air as the vehicle careened around corners, rushing toward Mercy General Hospital downtown.
Inside the cramped, brightly lit back of the ambulance, the lead paramedic monitored my vitals while urging me to push through the pain.
“Blood pressure is dropping, pulse is elevated, and she’s already dilated to eight centimeters!” the paramedic yelled over the engine roar, looking up at Roman. “Sir, you need to keep her calm. The smoke inhalation caused acute respiratory distress, which is accelerating the labor prematurely. We need to stabilize her oxygen levels immediately, or both mother and baby are going into distress!”
Roman didn't flinch. He grabbed a sterile gauze pad, wiping the sweat and soot from my forehead, his dark eyes locked entirely on mine.
“Listen to me, Elena,” Roman said, his voice dropping into that deep, commanding tone that made the entire world obey him. “You are the strongest woman I have ever known. You built our lives, you protected our family, and you are going to bring our son into this world. Look at me. Just look at my eyes.”
I focused on him, letting his steady, unshakeable strength anchor me as another violent contraction tore through my body. I gripped his hand so hard I thought I might break his fingers, but he didn't even flinch.
“Push!” the paramedic instructed sharply as the ambulance screeched to a halt outside the emergency trauma bays of Mercy General.
Doors flew open. Fluorescent lights flashed overhead. Within seconds, a team of obstetric nurses and trauma doctors swarmed the gurney, wheeling me into a sterile delivery room that smelled of antiseptic and bright hope.
Roman was barred at the swinging double doors for three agonizing minutes while the surgical team prepped me for emergency delivery, but true to his word, he forced his way past the head nurse wearing full surgical scrubs, refusing to be kept away.
“Hold my hand,” I whispered, tears streaming down my face as the bright surgical lights glared down at us.
“I’m here,” Roman breathed, leaning down to press his lips against my sweaty forehead. “I’m right here, my love.”

One final, monumental push. A sharp cry pierced the delivery room—clear, loud, and full of life.
“Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Rinaldi,” the obstetrician smiled, lifting a squirming, healthy baby boy wrapped in a warm blanket. “You have a son.”
