Chapter 2 - The Roots of the ConspiracyThe phone kept ringing, its harsh digital chime echoing off the quartz counters while Roman stood motionless, staring at the manila envelope as if it contained a ticking bomb.

He didn't pick it up immediately. He let it ring twice more before swiping the screen and pressing it to his ear.
“Speak,” Roman barked, his voice instantly shifting from a worried husband into the cold, calculating CEO of Rinaldi Global.
I couldn't hear the voice on the other end, but I watched the color drain completely from Roman’s face. His fingers gripped the edge of the counter so tightly his knuckles turned stark white.
“Are you sure?” Roman asked, his tone dropping an octave into pure ice. A pause followed—long, agonizing, and filled with static. “Secure the perimeter. Let no one in or out until I arrive.”
He ended the call without saying goodbye. He shoved the phone back into his pocket and looked at me, his eyes dark with a suppressed storm.
“What was that?” I demanded, stepping closer despite my pregnancy fatigue. “Roman, what did they find in that file?”
“That call wasn't about the file,” Roman said grimly, reaching out to take my hands. His palms were ice-cold. “That was my head of security at our Palm Beach estate. Someone breached the outer gates ten minutes ago. They didn't steal anything. They just left a message.”
“A message?”
“A burned envelope left on our front doorstep,” Roman whispered, pulling me gently toward him. “Containing photographs of you, Elena. Photos taken inside your OB-GYN's office yesterday. Photos taken while you were buying baby clothes on Lincoln Road. Victor Kane isn't just trying to destroy my company. He’s letting me know that he can reach inside our home, touch our unborn child, and watch our every move whenever he pleases.”
The blood rushed in my ears. The room seemed to tilt sideways. For months, I had thought the humiliation of Serena Cross was the worst trial of my life, but I was living on the edge of a razor-sharp blade. Victor Kane wasn't a standard corporate rival; he was a predator who targeted families.
“That’s why you pushed me away,” I breathed, the pieces finally clicking together in my mind. “That’s why you let the world believe you were cheating. You needed a distraction so blinding, so scandalous, that Kane’s spies would focus entirely on Serena while you built a defensive wall around us.”
“And I failed,” Roman muttered, a rare note of self-loathing cracking his iron facade. “The moment Kane realized my marriage was a smokescreen, he stopped watching Serena and started watching you. That surveillance file on the counter... it contains every detail of your routine, Elena. Your medical records, your daily walks, your schedule. Kane was preparing to use you as leverage to force me to hand over the controlling shares of Rinaldi Global.”
I looked down at the envelope, my heart pounding against my ribs. “So what do we do?”
“We finish what we started tonight,” Roman said with sudden, steely resolve. “Serena has already copied Kane’s primary financial ledger from his private offshore server. Tonight is the final handoff at our Miami estate. Once I have the ledger, my legal team will file federal wire fraud and extortion charges against Kane that will put him away for the rest of his natural life. But until then... we have to play our parts to the very end.”
“Play our parts?” I repeated, a cold knot forming in my stomach.
“Kane has cameras inside our Palm Beach mansion, and he’s watching our Miami home tonight,” Roman explained rapidly, grabbing his car keys. “He expects us to be at war. He expects you to pack your bags and leave me over the Serena scandal tonight. If you stay, or if we look like a united front, Kane will know we're setting a trap.”
I stared at my husband, horror dawning on me. “You want me to leave? Tonight? Heavily pregnant, in the middle of a media storm?”
“I want you safe,” Roman corrected fiercely, cupping my face with his hands. “I’ve arranged for a secure transport to take you to our secluded safehouse in the Florida Keys. You’ll be guarded by my most trusted men. Once I sign over the fake surrender documents to Kane tomorrow morning and he thinks he’s won, the trap snaps shut. I’ll come get you, and this nightmare will be over.”
I hated the plan. Every maternal instinct in my body screamed against being separated from him while a monster like Victor Kane was hunting us. But looking into Roman’s eyes—seeing the absolute terror of losing his family—I knew he was right.
We packed a single bag in silence. As midnight approached, the tension in our mansion was thick enough to cut with a knife.
Then, the lights flickered and died.

Before Roman could reach his firearm locked in the study, a massive explosion rocked the rear wing of the house. The security alarms wailed, red emergency lights flashed, and thick, black smoke began pouring into the hallway from the downstairs foyer.
Someone had bombed the estate. Victor Kane hadn't waited for morning. He had decided to burn us out right then and there.
