Chapter 3 - The Deflation of a LieVanessa’s sobbing instantly stopped. Her eyes widened in genuine, primal horror as she saw the glint of the pin in the six-year-old’s hand.

"Get her away from me!" Vanessa shrieked, dropping her angelic persona entirely and scrambling backward in her heavy gown. "Security! Get this crazy child away!"

"Vanessa, calm down, she's just a child—" Richard started, reaching out.

"Don't touch me!" Vanessa screamed at Richard, her voice shrill and unnerving.

Emily didn't run. She walked forward with slow, deliberate steps, her face pale, tears wet on her cheeks. "If it's real, Daddy won't hate you. But if it's fake, he won't be hurt anymore."

With a swift, desperate motion before anyone could grab her, Emily jabbed the needle straight into the prominent curve beneath Vanessa's ivory wedding dress.

HISSSSSSSSS...

The sound echoed off the high marble walls like a dying balloon.

Every breath in the room held. Hundreds of elite guests watched in stunned, paralyzed disbelief as the smooth, perfectly rounded pregnancy belly began to sink.

The fabric collapsed inward. Soft, empty folds of silk crumpled where a child was supposed to be resting. Within ten terrifying seconds, the high-profile pregnancy flattened completely against Vanessa’s slender waist.

A small silicone valve popped out from beneath the ripped seam of her gown, dropping onto the pristine floor with a hollow thud.

Gasps exploded across the room. Cameras flashed rapidly as reporters and guests pulled out their phones.

"Oh my God..." a woman in the front row gasped. "It was fake!"

Richard stared at the flattened dress, then at the silicone apparatus lying at his feet. His world tilted. His knees felt weak, his heart pounding violently against his sternum. Sixty years of intelligence, power, and prestige had been reduced to a pathetic joke in front of the world.

He looked down at Emily. The little girl was crying softly, her tiny cheek still red from his slap.

"Emily..." Richard fell to his knees on the cold marble, reaching for her with shaking hands. "My baby... I'm so sorry... Oh God, Emily, forgive me..."

Emily took two steps back, pulling her hands away from his touch. "You didn't believe me, Daddy. You chose her."

Richard collapsed back against his heels, destroyed. But as he turned his furious, tear-filled eyes toward Vanessa, he realized she wasn't even looking at him.

Vanessa was staring toward the back of the ballroom, her face drained of all color, her lips trembling in pure, unadulterated terror.
