Chapter 6 - The Fall of the EmpireRichard couldn't answer. The truth was far more complicated than Marcus made it sound, but in the court of public opinion—and in the eyes of his innocent daughter—he was already condemned.

"I didn't set the fire," Richard said, his voice breaking as he looked at Emily. "I swear to you, Emily, I tried to save Arthur. I burned my hands trying to break the door down!"
Marcus sneered. "Save your speeches for the police, Vance. The federal grand jury received these exact files thirty minutes ago. Your assets are frozen. Your warrant is being signed."
Sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder as police cruisers pulled up to the estate’s grand driveway.
The wedding guests began fleeing the ballroom in a frenzy, desperate to disassociate themselves from the disgraced billionaire. Within minutes, the grand hall—once filled with laughter, flowers, and gold—was nearly empty, save for the police officers rushing inside, Vanessa being placed in handcuffs, and Marcus watching with satisfied triumph.
"Richard Vance, you are under arrest for corporate fraud, arson, and conspiracy," an officer announced, pulling Richard’s hands behind his back and snapping the cold steel cuffs onto his wrists.
Richard didn't resist. He didn't care about the handcuffs, the news cameras, or the impending trial. His eyes were locked entirely on Emily, who stood alone among the scattered white rose petals, looking so tiny in her torn dress.
"Take care of my daughter!" Richard begged the officers as they began hauling him away. "Please! Don't let anything happen to Emily!"
Marcus stepped up beside Emily, looking down at her. "Don't worry, Richard. As Arthur Sterling's grandson, I am now the primary legal claimant to the Vance estate. The girl comes with me."

"No!" Richard screamed, thrashing against the police grip. "Touch her and I'll kill you! Marcus! LEAVE HER ALONE!"
The heavy oak doors slammed shut, dragging Richard out into the rain, leaving Emily in the hands of the man who had just destroyed her family.
