Chapter 2 - The Emergency Room Reckoning

The chaotic wail of the ambulance siren pierced the night as the emergency vehicle tore down the winding private roads of the Vance estate. Liam had climbed into the back with Madison, leaving me in the passenger seat of our sedan while Eleanor sped behind the ambulance like a madwoman, flashing her high beams and honking relentlessly.

When we arrived at St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital, the trauma bay erupted into motion. Paramedics wheeled Madison through the automatic double doors, their uniforms splattered with bright crimson. Madison was barely conscious, her skin as gray as slate, her lips tinted a terrifying shade of blue as she wept through an oxygen mask.

"Female, twenty-four, severe acute hemorrhage, hypovolemic shock, catastrophic uterine contractions!" the lead paramedic shouted to the trauma team.

"Uterine contractions?" Liam repeated, stumbling behind the gurney, his face ashen, looking utterly lost. "No, you don't understand, she's not married—she's not pregnant! It’s food poisoning! Check her stomach!"

Eleanor sprinted through the sliding glass doors, her expensive designer coat dragging on the linoleum floor, her diamond rings clacking against the reception desk. "Save her! Do you know who I am? I am Eleanor Vance! Call the chief of medicine right now!"

The trauma doors slammed shut in our faces.

Liam stood frozen under the harsh, buzzing fluorescent lights of the waiting area. His hands were covered in his sister’s blood. He turned slowly toward Eleanor, his breathing ragged. "Mom, what was in that soup? Did you use bad herbs? Did you buy some unregulated organic garbage online?"

Before Eleanor could answer, her eyes locked onto me. I had just stepped through the entrance, my coat pulled tightly around my protruding stomach, my posture calm, unwavering, and lethal.

The grief and shock on Eleanor’s face hardened into murderous venom. She lunged across the waiting room, her manicured nails curled into claws aimed straight for my throat.

"You did this!" Eleanor screamed, her voice bouncing violently off the hospital walls. Several nurses turned in alarm. "You switched the bowls! You tried to murder my daughter!"

Liam caught his mother by the wrists just inches from my face, struggling to hold her back. "Mom! Stop it! What the hell are you talking about? Clara didn't touch Madison's food!"

"She knew!" Eleanor shrieked, thrashing against her son’s grip, completely unhinged. "She knew what was in that bowl! She poisoned my Madison out of jealousy! She's a gutter rat who wants to destroy this family!"

"Eleanor," I said, my voice steady, resonant, and chillingly clear. "Why would there be poison in a bowl of prenatal soup that *you* prepared with your own hands?"

The question hung in the air like a guillotine.

Liam stopped struggling and stared down at his mother. The confusion on his face began to curdle into something far darker. "Mom? Why are you saying someone poisoned the bowl? You made the soup from scratch. You plated every single dish."

Eleanor’s mouth opened and closed like a dying fish. Her eyes darted frantically around the room. She realized the trap she had walked into. To accuse me of deliberately swapping the bowls, she would have to admit that she had placed a lethal substance into one of them in the first place.

"I... I meant she put something in it while I was checking the oven!" Eleanor stammered, sweating through her makeup. "She hates Madison! She’s always resented how much Madison has!"

"I never touched your spices, Eleanor," I replied smoothly, staring directly into her soul. "And I certainly didn't bring industrial-strength abortifacients into your home."

At that exact moment, the double doors of the trauma bay swung open. Dr. Sterling, the head of obstetrics and Eleanor’s long-time family friend, walked out. He looked exhausted, his surgical scrub cap pulled low over his brow, his gloves stained with fresh blood.

Eleanor immediately broke away from Liam and rushed forward. "Richard! Tell me she’s alive! Tell me Madison is going to be fine!"

Dr. Sterling pulled down his mask, his expression grim. He glanced around the waiting room, lowering his voice. "We managed to stabilize the bleeding, Eleanor. We had to perform an emergency D&C and administer four units of packed red blood cells. She suffered a complete, catastrophic placental abruption."

Liam blinked, shaking his head. "Placental abruption? What are you talking about? Madison wasn't pregnant!"

Dr. Sterling gave Liam a bewildered, solemn look. "Liam, your sister was nearly eleven weeks pregnant. Didn’t she tell you?"

Liam staggered backward as if struck by a physical blow, his back hitting the wall. "She was... what?"

"And that's not all," Dr. Sterling added, his voice dropping into a tense, clinical severity. "This wasn't a natural miscarriage. Her blood work came back with massive, lethal concentrations of misoprostol and mifepristone. High chemical grade. Whoever administered this gave her enough to trigger violent hemorrhaging within minutes. If she had arrived five minutes later, she would have bled to death on the floor."

Eleanor let out a strangled, breathless squeak and buried her face in her hands, trembling uncontrollably.

Dr. Sterling looked Eleanor straight in the eye, his tone deadly serious. "Eleanor, hospital protocol requires us to report intentional chemical poisoning to law enforcement immediately. The police are already on their way."

I watched Eleanor’s knees buckle. She slumped into a plastic chair, her face drained of every ounce of aristocratic arrogance.

I pulled my phone out of my pocket, unlocked the screen, and slipped my thumb over a secure audio recording file I had saved just two hours earlier in her kitchen. The war had officially begun, and I had no intention of taking prisoners.
