Chapter 6 - The Bail Hearing Ambush

At 10:00 AM, the county courthouse was swarming with reporters, paparazzi, and high-society onlookers eager to witness the fall of the Vance dynasty. Eleanor Vance was led into the courtroom wearing an orange jumpsuit instead of her usual Chanel suit, her hands shackled to her waist. Her silver hair, usually immaculately coiffed, was disheveled, and her makeup was smeared.

Yet, despite her humiliation, her aristocratic chin remained defiantly elevated. She truly believed her money and influence would buy her freedom before lunchtime.

Her defense attorney, a silver-tongued powerhouse named Julian Vance-Hayes (her second cousin), stood before Judge Vance-Whittaker.

"Your Honor," Julian argued with sweeping theatrical gestures. "This entire spectacle is a tragic domestic misunderstanding manufactured by an opportunistic daughter-in-law. Mrs. Eleanor Vance is an esteemed philanthropist, a pillar of this community. The tragic loss of Miss Madison Vance’s pregnancy was an accidental contamination. We request immediate release on personal recognizance, or at most, a modest cash bail."

The prosecutor, ADA Ramirez, stood up to object, but before he could speak, Evelyn Cross approached the bar.

"Your Honor, I am representing Clara Vance, the primary victim, and I have filed an emergency motion to submit newly discovered evidence and a victim impact statement before bail is considered."

Julian sneered. "Objection! Clara Vance is not a party to this criminal arraignment. This is grandstanding!"

"I will allow it," the judge said sternly, eyeing Eleanor’s contemptuous expression. "Proceed, counselor."

Evelyn plugged a secure flash drive into the courtroom’s media console. The large flat-screen monitors mounted on the wood-paneled walls flickered to life.

"Your Honor," Evelyn announced, "two weeks ago, my client noticed strange chemical smells in the family kitchen and found several packages hidden in Eleanor Vance's greenhouse. Suspecting her mother-in-law was attempting to sabotage her health, my client installed a motion-activated micro-camera inside the kitchen pantry."

Eleanor’s eyes widened in sudden, absolute terror. Her knuckles turned white against the defense table. "Julian! Stop this!" she whispered frantically.

The video began playing on the monitors.

The courtroom fell dead silent.

The screen clearly displayed Eleanor Vance standing at the kitchen counter the evening prior. The timestamp read 6:14 PM. Eleanor could be seen pulling a labeled amber bottle from her apron, emptying five large tablets onto a marble cutting board, and methodically crushing them into a fine white powder with a heavy rolling pin.

Then, her voice came through the high-definition speakers with horrifying clarity. Eleanor was laughing softly to herself, muttering under her breath:

*"Enjoy your dinner, Clara you pathetic little parasite. Let's see Liam love you when your womb is as barren as the gutter you crawled out of. The Vance fortune belongs to me."*

The footage then showed Eleanor carefully spooning the lethal powder into the left porcelain bowl with the gold trim, stirring it thoroughly, and whispering, *"Rest in pieces, bastard."*

Gasps rippled across the packed courtroom. Two reporters immediately began typing furiously on their laptops.

Liam, sitting in the front row behind the prosecution, covered his eyes and shook with suppressed rage.

Eleanor sprang out of her seat, rattling her shackles against the wood. "Turn it off! That is an illegal recording! That was in my private home!"

"Sit down, defendant!" Judge Vance-Whittaker banged his gavel with thunderous fury. "Sit down or I will have you gagged and held in contempt!"

Julian Vance-Hayes sank into his chair, rubbing his temples, knowing his defense had just been blown out of the water.

ADA Ramirez stood up, his voice ringing with cold fury. "In light of this undeniable, premeditated evidence, the State upgrades the charges against Eleanor Vance to Attempted Murder in the First Degree, Aggravated Assault with Intent to Cause Miscarriage, and Tampering with Food or Drink. Given her immense financial resources and foreign bank accounts, she represents an extreme flight risk and an imminent danger to society. The State requests remand without bail."

"Your Honor, please!" Eleanor pleaded, her aristocratic facade completely shattering into pathetic, desperate wailing. "I am a Vance! You know my family! You went to Harvard with Arthur!"

Judge Vance-Whittaker looked down from the bench with utter revulsion.

"Mrs. Vance, your family pedigree does not place you above the law, nor does it excuse the demonic cruelty displayed in that video. Bail is denied. You will remain in maximum security custody at the county detention facility pending trial."

The gavel slammed down with the finality of a prison door.

As the bailiffs grabbed Eleanor by the elbows to drag her through the holding cell doors, she caught my eye across the crowded room. I was standing tall, holding Liam’s hand, my other hand resting serenely on my pregnant belly.

"You ruined me!" Eleanor shrieked, kicking wildly as her heels dragged across the marble floor. "You took everything from me, you bitch!"

May you like

"No, Eleanor," I said aloud, loud enough for every reporter's microphone to capture. "You poisoned your own family for money. You destroyed yourself."
