Chapter 4 - The Poisoner's Motive

By 4:00 AM, the cold fluorescent lights of the private hospital lounge felt like an interrogation cell. Madison had been transferred to the intensive care unit, heavily sedated and surrounded by monitoring equipment. Liam was sitting on the edge of a stiff armchair, his head buried in his hands, softly weeping.

Eleanor had been escorted down to the precinct for preliminary questioning, though her high-priced corporate attorneys had already arrived to post whatever bail they could negotiate. She wasn't formally charged yet—the police were waiting on the official lab results from the thermos and the search warrant of the mansion.

I sat across from Liam, sipping warm water, feeling our baby kick rhythmically against my ribs. Every flutter was a reminder of what I was fighting for.

"Liam," I said softly.

He looked up, his eyes bloodshot, his face hollowed by shock. "Clara, I don't understand. Why? Why would she do this? She’s overbearing, she’s snobbish, she’s obsessed with status... but murder? She wanted to kill our child? Her own grandchild?"

"She didn't want to kill just a child, Liam," I said, pulling out a manila folder from my bag that I had kept hidden for over two months. "She wanted to kill the heir."

Liam frowned, wiping his nose with the back of his hand. "What heir? What are you talking about?"

I placed the folder on the coffee table between us. Inside were copies of his late father's will and the Vance Family Trust agreement, documents I had obtained through a friend working in estate litigation after Eleanor made several cryptic comments about our financial future during our wedding.

"Your father, Arthur Vance, created an ironclad trust before he died four years ago," I explained, pointing to the highlighted clauses. "He knew Eleanor was reckless with money. He knew she spent millions on luxury galas, failed boutique investments, and vanity projects. So he put seventy percent of the family fortune into a generational trust."

Liam leaned forward, squinting at the legal jargon. "The trust... it releases funds upon the birth of the first legitimate grandchild?"

"Not just funds, Liam. Control," I corrected him sharply. "Whoever fathers or mothers the first legitimate grandchild of Arthur Vance gains sixty percent voting control over Vance Enterprises and immediate access to the fifty-million-dollar liquid trust. If neither of you had children before Eleanor turned sixty-five, the entire estate would default to Eleanor's complete executive control."

Liam’s jaw dropped. "Eleanor turns sixty-five in three months."

"Exactly," I said. "When we announced our pregnancy six months ago, we signed Eleanor's financial death warrant. She realized that the moment our child drew breath, the money she uses to fund her opulent lifestyle would transfer to *you* and *me*. And she knows that neither of us would allow her to continue squandering the estate on frivolous social climbing."

"So she tried to abort our child to buy herself time," Liam whispered, disgust and horror dripping from every syllable. "She wanted to force a late-term miscarriage so we couldn't conceive again before her birthday deadline."

"And there's another piece of the puzzle," I continued, leaning closer. "Madison's pregnancy."

Liam looked up sharply. "Madison? She didn't even have a boyfriend! She's been living at the estate, going to parties, posting on social media—"

"Madison has been seeing someone secretly, Liam. Someone your mother would consider a total catastrophe."

Before Liam could ask another question, the glass door of the lounge slid open. Detective Miller stepped inside, her face tight and exhausted. Behind her was another woman dressed in a sharp navy blazer—Attorney Evelyn Cross, one of the most formidable criminal defense and family law attorneys in the state, whom I had retained on retainer weeks ago when Eleanor first began showing signs of targeted malice.

"Mrs. Vance," Detective Miller said, addressing me directly. "The preliminary state lab analysis on the thermos broth is complete."

Liam held his breath. "And?"

"The broth in that thermos contained a lethal dose of crushed synthetic prostaglandin analogues—specifically veterinary-grade mifepristone mixed with misoprostol," Detective Miller stated bluntly. "And our officers executing the search warrant at the Vance estate just found three unwashed pharmaceutical pestles and an empty prescription bottle hidden behind the loose panel in Eleanor Vance's walk-in closet."

Liam let out a broken groan and covered his face.

"Detective," Evelyn Cross spoke up, her voice commanding and crisp. "Given that Mrs. Eleanor Vance deliberately introduced a lethal controlled substance into food prepared for my pregnant client, what are the formal charges?"

"Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, attempted forced termination of a pregnancy, and reckless endangerment resulting in catastrophic bodily injury," Detective Miller replied. "She is currently in holding at the county jail. Her bail hearing is set for ten o'clock this morning."

May you like

"Good," Evelyn said coldly. "Because we have additional evidence to present. Evidence that proves Eleanor Vance was not working alone, and that Madison’s secret pregnancy was the spark that ignited this entire powder keg."
