Chapter 5 - The Secret Lover

By mid-morning, the Vance family scandal had broken through the local news cycle. Tabloid helicopters were buzzing over the county courthouse, and television vans were lined up outside the hospital. The headline was everywhere: *High Society Poisoning: Vance Matriarch Accused of Spiking Dinner with Abortifacients.*

Evelyn Cross, Liam, and I were escorted through the hospital's private staff entrance to the third floor, where Madison had finally regained full consciousness in the recovery ward.

The room smelled of antiseptic and floral arrangements sent by society friends who still had no idea what had actually transpired. Madison was propped up in bed, looking frail, her eyes swollen from hours of uncontrollable weeping. An IV drip was connected to her arm, feeding her electrolytes and painkillers.

When the door clicked open, Madison flinched, shrinking back into her pillows. But when she saw Liam and me, her face contorted with raw, burning grief.

"Get out," Madison croaked, her voice raspy and hoarse from intubation. "Get her out of here, Liam! She did this to me! She swapped the bowls!"

"Madison, shut up and listen for five seconds!" Liam snapped, his voice booming with an authority I had never heard from him before. He walked straight to the edge of the bed, his knuckles white as he gripped the railing. "Clara didn't poison that soup. Mom did."

Madison stared at her brother, stunned into silence. "What... what are you talking about? Mom made that for Clara. Mom loves me."

"Mom made it for Clara *with poison in it*," Liam roared, tears spilling down his cheeks. "She put abortion pills in the bowl she gave to Clara to murder my baby! Clara found out and swapped the bowls to save her own child's life! Clara didn't know you were pregnant, Madison! Nobody knew!"

Madison froze. The words seemed to hit her with the weight of an anvil. She turned her trembling gaze toward me, her eyes searching mine for any sign of deception.

"You... you swapped them?" Madison whispered, her hands slowly moving down to clutch her empty, hollow stomach. "Mom put... the pills were from Mom?"

"Madison," I said gently, stepping closer so she could hear every syllable. "Who was the father of your baby?"

Madison began to shake violently. She pulled the thin hospital blanket up to her chin, her breathing turning shallow. "She told me... she told me he was going to ruin everything."

Evelyn Cross stepped forward, pulling a printout of bank transactions from her briefcase. "Madison, we reviewed the private family accounts that Eleanor had access to. Three weeks ago, Eleanor transferred two hundred and fifty thousand dollars to an offshore account registered to Marcus Kane."

Liam’s head snapped toward Evelyn. "Marcus Kane? The former chauffeur’s son? The mechanic she fired last summer?"

Madison burst into a wail of agonized tears, burying her face into her hands. "We fell in love! Marcus didn't care about the Vance money! He loved me for who I was! When I told him I was pregnant, he wanted to marry me. He wanted to take me away from Mom's suffocating control!"

She looked up at Liam, snot and tears streaming down her pale cheeks. "I told Mom three weeks ago. I thought she would finally understand. I thought she would let me be happy."

"What did Eleanor say?" I asked, already guessing the horrific answer.

"She went ballistic," Madison sobbed. "She called Marcus a dirty peasant. She said having a child with a mechanic would ruin our family name forever. She threatened to cut me off completely. Then she said... she promised she would handle it. She paid Marcus to leave town, but he refused. He told her he was going to take me to court for custody."

Madison grabbed her own hair, pulling at the roots in sheer agony. "Mom told me she had an appointment with a private clinic in Switzerland for me next week. She told me to drink her herbal tonic every night until we left to 'keep my strength up.' But I didn't drink it yesterday morning because it tasted bitter... so she must have thought I was being stubborn."

The pieces fell together with sickening clarity.

Eleanor had two problems: my unborn baby would take away her financial control of the Vance trust, and Madison's unborn baby would drag the Vance name through a scandalous custody battle with a working-class mechanic.

She had decided to solve both problems with one ruthless, cold-blooded culinary execution.

"She didn't just want to abort my baby," I whispered, the realization sending chills through my spine. "She had a second dose prepared. When she saw you drinking the gold-rimmed bowl, she didn't stop you because she thought you were drinking your normal portion. But the bowl you drank had the massive dose intended for my six-month pregnancy."

Madison let out a bloodcurdling scream of betrayal that shook the entire hospital room. "My mother... my own mother murdered my baby!"
