Chapter 3 - The Freezing TidesWithin twenty minutes, the opulent Morrison estate felt less like a home and more like a crime scene.

The lights flickered once, twice, and then stabilized as the estate’s automated systems shifted from private utility grids to emergency backup generators—because Arthur’s legal team had already frozen the corporate accounts used to pay the utility bills.

Brendan was trembling, staring at his phone screen where notification after notification flashed in red text: Account Frozen, Transfer Failed, Credit Limit Reached.

“You can’t do this,” Brendan whispered, his voice cracking as he looked up at me. He wasn't arrogant anymore. The fierce, untouchable corporate VP was gone, replaced by a terrified boy who had just realized he had no safety net. “Cassidy, please. If you call off your lawyers, we can talk. We can fix this. We can stay together—for the baby!”

I slowly stood up from the chair.

The waterlogged dress clung to my skin, heavy and cold, but I didn't shiver. I felt lighter than I had in years.

“For three years, Brendan, I sat at this table while your mother mocked my clothes, my background, and my family,” I said, my voice quiet, carrying an iron weight that made him flinch. “I stayed silent because I wanted to believe that somewhere beneath your ambition, there was a man who actually loved me for who I was.”

“I did!” Brendan lied instantly, desperation making his voice shrill. “I always loved you!”

“You loved the convenience of having a quiet, obedient wife who didn't ask questions while you climbed the corporate ladder I built for you,” I corrected him sharply. “You stood there and laughed while your mother poured dirty ice water over my head. You watched your girlfriend treat me like garbage in my own home.”

Jessica stepped back, her face losing all its color. “Wait... your home? This house belongs to the Morrisons!”

“This house,” Arthur chimed in smoothly, stepping forward with a leather-bound deed, “was purchased three years ago through a blind trust managed by Sterling Apex. The deed has always been in Ms. Sterling’s name. You have been living here at her gracious pleasure.”

Diane Morrison, who had remained silent in shock until that exact moment, suddenly surged forward, her face twisted in pure, venomous rage.

“You scheming little bitch!” Diane shrieked, lunging toward me with her fingernails bared like claws. “You trapped my son! You tricked us all with your poor-girl act!”

She didn't even take two steps.

Two Sterling Apex security guards stepped in front of me instantly, their broad shoulders forming an impenetrable wall. One of them caught Diane by the wrist with professional, unyielding force, halting her charge mid-air.

“Unhand me, you brute!” Diane screamed, struggling wildly. “Do you know who I am? I am Diane Morrison!”

“Not anymore, Mrs. Morrison,” Arthur said coldly. “According to the financial audit initiated under Protocol 7, your personal philanthropic foundation has been flagged for massive embezzlement and tax fraud. Federal investigators are already en route to your winter home in Palm Beach.”

Diane went completely limp in the guard's grip, her eyes rolling back as the sheer weight of the catastrophe hit her all at once. She slumped against the dining table, gasping for air.

Brendan dropped to his knees on the Persian rug, right where the water from my dress had pooled.

“Cassidy... please,” he choked out, tears finally spilling over his eyelashes. “I’m begging you. Take everything. Take the company, take the house, take the car—just don't ruin my life. I’ll go away. You’ll never have to see me again.”

I looked down at him—the man who had held all the power in our marriage, now kneeling in a puddle of dirty ice water at my feet.

“Get up, Brendan,” I said, my voice devoid of pity. “You wanted me to disappear? Fine. But you’re going to do it on my terms.”

May you like

I turned toward Arthur, nodding once.

“Escort them off the property,” I commanded. “And make sure the locks are changed before midnight.”
