Chapter 9 - The New DawnThe nursery was bathed in the golden light of an October afternoon.

The crib was made, the rocking chair was cushioned, and a stack of children’s books rested neatly on the bookshelf.
I sat in the rocking chair, holding my newborn daughter, Maya Sterling, in my arms. She was tiny, perfect, with a full head of dark curls and tiny fingers wrapped tightly around my thumb.
The estate was quiet, peaceful, and entirely secure.
Arthur Vance stepped softly into the open doorway, holding a single manila folder. “Ms. Sterling? Sorry to disturb your afternoon, but the final corporate restructuring documents from the European branch just arrived for your signature.”
I looked down at Maya, who was breathing softly against my chest, before looking up at Arthur with a gentle smile.
“Leave them on the desk, Arthur,” I whispered. “Business can wait for an hour.”
Arthur nodded respectfully, placing the folder down and quietly exiting the room, closing the door behind him.
I rocked slowly back and forth, looking out the window at the sprawling gardens where the autumn leaves were turning a brilliant shade of amber and gold.
Seven months ago, I had been standing in a wealthy dining room, soaked in freezing water while strangers laughed at my humiliation, believing I was nothing more than a poor, pregnant burden.
Now, I was the undisputed queen of my own destiny, holding the future in my arms.

“Never let anyone make you feel small, my love,” I whispered softly against Maya’s warm hair. “We built this empire together, and no one will ever take it away.”
Maya let out a tiny, contented sigh in her sleep, completely safe in the heart of our unbreakable fortress.
