Chapter 8 - Rebuilding the LegacyTwo months later, Sterling Apex Industries announced the launch of the Sterling-Morrison Foundation—a multi-billion-dollar philanthropic initiative dedicated to providing housing, education, and career rehabilitation for single mothers and victims of corporate exploitation.

The press conference was broadcast live across national news networks.

I stood at the podium in the grand auditorium of our downtown headquarters, wearing an elegant cream blazer, my baby bump prominent, my posture unyielding and serene.

Microphones flashed. Cameras clicked. Journalists shouted questions from every angle.

“Ms. Sterling! Is it true that the foundation’s initial endowment came from recovered assets of disgraced corporate families?”

I smiled calmly into the sea of lenses.

“Every empire is built on a foundation,” I spoke into the microphone, my voice steady and resonant. “Some are built on greed, arrogance, and the mistreatment of the vulnerable. Those empires inevitably crumble from within. But true strength—true wealth—is built on resilience, justice, and the unwavering refusal to let cruelty define your worth.”

The applause that erupted in the auditorium was deafening.

In the back row of the press gallery, watching through a live broadcast on his cracked smartphone inside a dimly lit diner somewhere in Indiana, Brendan Morrison stared at the screen, tears streaming down his face as he realized what he had thrown away for pride and cruelty.

He had lost everything.

And I had gained the world.
