Chapter 5 - The Corporate ChessboardTwo weeks after the fall of the Morrison family, Sterling Apex Industries was operating with frictionless, terrifying efficiency.

Without Brendan’s bloated middle-management structure and Diane’s embezzlement schemes draining resources, our quarterly profit projections spiked by eighteen percent. Arthur Vance sat across from me in my private top-floor office overlooking downtown Chicago, sliding a sleek black dossier across the glass desk.

“The board has ratified your restructuring plan, Ms. Sterling,” Arthur said, his tone admiring. “Morrison Global Enterprises has been completely dismantled. Their physical assets have been liquidated at auction, and their former corporate headquarters is currently being repurposed as a community health clinic.”

I smiled faintly, tracing the edge of my teacup. “A fitting end for a building that was built on arrogance.”

“Indeed,” Arthur agreed. Then his expression turned slightly cautious. “There is one small development regarding Brendan Morrison.”

I looked up. “Go on.”

“He’s attempted to file a civil lawsuit alleging marital coercion and wrongful termination, claiming you manipulated him into marriage under false pretenses.”

I let out a short, humorless laugh. “On what grounds? He didn't even know I owned the company until the night I executed Protocol 7.”

“Exactly,” Arthur smiled thinly. “His own lawyers dropped him yesterday afternoon once they realized he couldn't even afford the filing fees. He’s currently working the night shift at a 24-hour freight depot on the south side.”

Poetic justice, served cold.

“Leave him be, Arthur,” I said, leaning back in my leather ergonomic chair. “Let him experience what it actually means to work for a living without a silver spoon in his mouth.”

That afternoon, I decided to visit the main trading floor of Sterling Apex.

For years, I had walked among these brokers and analysts wearing an oversized coat, carrying coffee orders, and pretending to be just another low-level administrative assistant when I visited Brendan at his office. No one had ever looked twice at me.

Now, stepping out of the private executive elevator, the entire floor went dead silent.

Hundreds of brokers, analysts, and directors stood up simultaneously, their eyes fixed on me with a mixture of awe, reverence, and absolute respect. They didn't see a poor, pregnant burden anymore. They saw the apex predator who ruled the financial world.

I walked slowly down the center aisle, my heels clicking rhythmically against the polished marble floor. My floral maternity dress hugged my growing bump, but my head was held high, crowned with an unshakable dignity.

“At ease, everyone,” I said, my voice carrying clearly across the vast trading floor.

Instantly, the hum of activity resumed, but the energy in the room had shifted permanently. Sterling Apex belonged to me, body and soul. And anyone who thought they could use, mock, or break a Sterling had better prepare for the storm of a lifetime.
