Chapter 10 - UnbrokenOne year later.

The summer sun shone brightly over the manicured lawn of our backyard. The smell of grilled steaks and fresh peach cobbler filled the warm air, accompanied by the bright, joyful sound of laughter.
Evelyn stood near the oak dining table, dressed in a light summer dress, laughing as she poured fresh lemonade for her university classmates who had come over for a weekend barbecue. She looked healthy, vibrant, and completely radiant—a young woman who had reclaimed her life, her confidence, and her future.
She had recently graduated at the top of her class and accepted a position as a pediatric counselor at the regional hospital, helping young victims of trauma heal and rebuild their lives.
Dustin and his family were gone. The gym property had been leased to a reputable community fitness center, generating enough steady income to fund Evelyn’s foundation for years to come.
I stood by the grill, wearing my old flannel shirt with the sleeves rolled up, flipping a steak with a pair of tongs.
Eleanor walked up beside me, slipping her arm through mine, resting her head against my shoulder as we watched our daughter laugh with her friends.
"You look peaceful, Marcus," Eleanor whispered, leaning up to kiss my cheek.
"I am peaceful, sweetheart," I smiled, looking down at my hands—hands that had fought in dark wars overseas, hands that had protected my family when the storm came to our doorstep, and hands that were now simply content to hold my wife and build a home.
Evelyn looked across the lawn, caught my eye, and offered a bright, radiant smile, raising her glass in a silent toast to her father.

I raised my tongs in response, smiling back.
The shadow was gone. The quiet had returned. And under the warm Carolina sun, our family was finally, completely unbroken.
