Chapter 9 - The EndgameBefore Victor could give the command, I dropped my stance and threw a small, heavy steel flash-bang canister—retrieved from my duffel bag—straight onto the concrete floor between the four mercenaries.

CRACK-BANG!

A blinding flash of two million candlepower light accompanied by a deafening 170-decibel shockwave ripped through the enclosed gym space.

The four mercenaries were instantly disoriented, clutching their ears and eyes, their tactical formation shattering in a fraction of a second.

I moved like a phantom through the smoke.

I closed the distance to the nearest contractor, grabbed the barrel of his rifle, redirected it downward, and drove my foot into his knee. As he collapsed, I snatched the rifle from his grip, used the buttstock to strike the second mercenary across the jaw, and swept the third man’s legs out from under him.

The fourth mercenary recovered his vision, raising his pistol toward me.

I fired two non-lethal suppressed rounds—one through his shoulder, one through his thigh. He dropped his weapon, screaming in agony as he hit the floor.

Eight seconds. The entire mercenary team was neutralized, disarmed, and writhing on the concrete.

I dropped the empty rifle, walked up the wooden stairs to the office platform, and stepped into the room.

Victor Vance sat behind the desk. His hands were raised slowly away from his jacket, his gray eyes wide with absolute, horrifying shock. His sophisticated mercenary team—men he had paid tens of thousands of dollars to protect him—had been dismantled by a single man in less than ten seconds.

I pulled out my suppressed pistol and set it quietly on the desk between us.

"Shoot me then," Victor whispered, his voice trembling for the first time. "Go ahead. Do it."

"I'm not a murderer, Victor," I said softly, sitting in the leather chair across from him. "I'm a father."

I reached into my windbreaker pocket and pulled out a encrypted satellite drive, placing it beside the gun.

"What's that?" Victor asked, his brow furrowing.

"That drive contains the complete financial ledgers of your South American shipping containers," I explained in a calm, conversational tone. "Intercepted two days ago by my former teammates in Naval Intelligence who still owe me their lives. It details forty-two million dollars in illegal contraband routed through the gulf ports over the last three years."

Victor froze, his breath catching in his throat.

"If I press a single button on my watch right now," I continued, "that entire file is transmitted directly to the Department of Justice, the DEA, and the Maritime Security Task Force. You won't just go to prison, Victor. You'll spend the rest of your life in a supermax facility, and your family's entire fortune will be seized by the federal government."

Victor stared at the drive, then looked up at me. The arrogant crime lord who had entered this town to avenge his family’s honor was completely broken.

"What do you want?" Victor choked out.

"I want Dustin to remain in Florida for the rest of his life," I stated. "I want you and Sal to pack your bags and liquidate your assets in this state within thirty days."

"And if we leave?"

"If you leave, the drive stays in a safe deposit box," I said, standing up and picking my pistol off the desk. "You get to retire in comfort, Victor. But if I ever hear the name Vance in this city again... the file gets sent."

Victor closed his eyes, taking a long, shuddering breath. "We'll be gone by the end of the month."

May you like

"Good," I said.

I turned around, walked down the office stairs, and stepped past the groaning mercenaries out into the late afternoon sun.
