Chapter 3 - The Broken TrophyDustin lashed out in pure desperation, throwing a wild left jab followed by a spinning back-fist.

To an untrained eye, it was fast. To someone who had spent a decade dodging combat knives and bayonets in dark alleys across foreign cities, it was agonizingly slow and predictable.
I slipped under his back-fist, stepped inside his hips, and grabbed his right wrist and elbow. With a leverage technique refined through decades of military combatives, I twisted his arm behind his back and shoved him chest-first into the chain-link cage.
BANG.
The entire metal structure shuddered. Dustin screamed as I applied upward pressure to his shoulder joint, bringing him to his tiptoes.
"This is the arm you used to strike my daughter?" I asked quietly into his ear.
"I'm sorry! I'm sorry! Stop!" he sobbed, his bravado entirely crushed. "I won't go near her again! I swear to God!"
"I know you won't," I whispered.
I exerted two pounds of sudden, sharp torque.
POP.
His shoulder dislocated from the socket with a sickening crunch. Dustin shrieked, dropping to his knees as I released his arm. He lay on his side on the mat, weeping hysterically, clutching his useless shoulder to his chest.
I turned around slowly. Coach Vance stood fifteen feet away near the water cooler, holding a heavy iron kettlebell, his hands trembling violently.
"You..." Vance stammered, staring at his four top fighters lying broken across the gym floor. "Who the fuck are you?"
"I'm Evelyn's father," I replied.
I walked calmly over to the front desk, picked up my leather wristwatch, and strapped it back onto my left wrist. I retrieved the brass key, unlocked the front deadbolt, and stepped back out into the cool night air.
I pulled out my phone and dialed Eleanor.
"Eleanor," I said, my voice steady as I unlocked my truck. "How is she?"
"She's sleeping now," Eleanor wept softly over the line. "The doctors gave her pain medication. Marcus... where are you? What did you do?"
"I settled the immediate issue," I replied, starting the truck engine. "I'm coming to the hospital now."
"Marcus," Eleanor's voice filled with sudden panic. "Dustin's uncle... Sal Vance... he just called my personal cell three minutes ago. He said he knows Evelyn is in the ER. He said if Dustin doesn't call him back in twenty minutes, he's sending people to the hospital."
I paused, my hand on the gear shift.
Sal Vance. The local crime boss who operated out of a high-end steakhouse downtown, using muscle to extort small businesses and control illegal gambling dens. He thought he ruled this city because local politicians were in his pocket.
"He won't be sending anyone to the hospital, Eleanor," I said softly. "Stay in Evelyn's room. Lock the door from the inside."

"Marcus, what are you going to do?!"
"I'm going to cut the head off the snake," I said, and hung up the phone.
