Chapter 5 - The War RoomThe first lieutenant pulled a snub-nosed revolver from his waistband.

He didn't get the chance to raise it.

I grabbed a heavy wooden dining chair beside me and shattered it across his chest and arms. The impact sent him crashing into a marble pillar, dropping his gun. I stepped on his wrist, breaking the bone, and kicked the revolver under the bar.

The second lieutenant was faster, unholstering a Glock and aiming for my center mass. I dived behind a heavy oak dining table as two rounds tore through the wood, shattering wine glasses behind me.

I swept the lieutenant's legs with the heavy table leg, overturning the massive furniture. As he stumbled backward over a chair, I closed the gap, caught his gun arm, and drove a thumb into the nerve cluster beneath his armpit. His hand went numb, dropping the weapon. A sharp palm strike to his throat crushed his windpipe, sending him choking to the floor.

It took fourteen seconds.

Sal Vance was left sitting alone in his booth. The gold ring on his right hand tapped nervously against his whiskey glass. For the first time in twenty years, the untouchable crime boss looked into the eyes of true, unadulterated death.

I walked over to his booth, slid into the leather seat across from him, and picked up a clean napkin from the table to wipe the sweat from my brow.

"You..." Sal whispered, his voice shaking despite his efforts to appear calm. "You're not just some nurse's husband. What are you?"

"I'm a man who wants his family left alone," I said flatly.

"You think you can come into my town, lay hands on my men, and just walk away?" Sal spat, trying to regain his composure. "I have guys in the precinct, old man. I have judges on retainer. By tomorrow morning, you'll be locked in a state prison for armed robbery and assault!"

I pulled a small black digital recorder from my pocket and set it on the table between us.

"This recorder contains forty hours of audio files," I said calmly. "Transcripts of Dustin boasting about how you use his MMA gym to launder drug money from the docks. Names, dates, bank accounts, and the names of the two city councilmen taking payouts from your shell companies."

Sal's face went from pale to ghostly white. "Where... where did you get that?"

"I spent fifteen years doing intelligence gathering and target neutralization for the United States Military, Sal," I replied, leaning across the table until my eyes were inches from his. "Your entire operation is amateur hour. I had your phones cloned within three days of Dustin making threats to my daughter."

Sal swallowed hard, his hands trembling on the tablecloth. "What do you want?"

"Here are my terms," I said, holding up three fingers.

"One: Dustin leaves this state by noon tomorrow. If he ever steps foot within fifty miles of my daughter again, I won't go to his gym. I'll come to his bedroom."

"Two: You personally sign over the deed to the commercial property Dustin's gym sits on to a trust fund for Evelyn’s medical expenses and college tuition."

"Three: You and your men forget my family ever existed. If a single glass breaks at my house, if my wife gets a strange phone call, or if my daughter feels unsafe for even one second... I release these audio files directly to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and then I come back here to finish what we started."

Sal stared at me for a long, agonizing minute. He looked at his two unconscious lieutenants bleeding on his dining room floor, then looked at the cold, dead certainty in my eyes.

He realized he wasn't negotiating with a angry father. He was negotiating with a ghost who knew how to make people disappear.

"Dustin will be on a bus to Florida by morning," Sal whispered, his voice trembling. "The property paperwork will be delivered to your lawyer by Friday."

May you like

"Good choice, Sal," I said.

I picked up my recorder, stood up, and walked out of the restaurant into the quiet night.
