Chapter 10 - The Vow on the Water

Summer returned to the Sound.

The Fierro estate was bathed in golden late-afternoon sunlight. White lilies—my daughter’s namesakes—bloomed in profusion along the limestone terraces.

From the lawn, the joyful laughter of children drifted up toward the balcony. Lily was running across the grass in a bright yellow sundress, chasing Giovanni’s four-year-old nephew, Leo. The little boy had made a complete recovery from his asthma, his cheeks flushed with health as he clutched a miniature wooden sailboat.

"Uncle Gio! Look! Leo’s boat is faster than mine!" Lily shouted, waving toward the stone terrace.

Giovanni, dressed casually in linen trousers and a white rolled-sleeve shirt, leaned against the stone balustrade and waved back. "That’s because Leo's boat has an extra sail, little bird! We'll fix yours before dinner!"

I walked out through the French doors carrying two glasses of iced lemonade. The diamond ring on my left hand caught the sun, casting rainbows against the stone floor.

It wasn't the three-carat emerald from our fake contract. It was a flawless six-carat cushion-cut diamond that Giovanni had placed on my finger three days ago, when we had renewed our vows in front of fifty close friends and the medical staff from County General.

Giovanni turned, wrapping his arms around my waist from behind as I set the glasses down. He rested his chin against my shoulder, his warm breath tickling my neck.

"You look beautiful, Dr. Fierro," he whispered.

"I haven't performed a single surgery yet, Gio. I'm just an intern again."

"You performed surgery on my heart the day you met me," he said softly, spinning me in his arms until I was looking up into his scarred, handsome face. "How does it feel? Knowing that no one can ever look down on you again?"

I looked out at the sprawling green lawn, watching Lily scoop up Leo after he tripped, dusting off his knees with the tender care she had learned from me.

I thought about the night at Sophia's wedding—the cheap navy dress, the repaired soles on my heels, the cruel smirk on Tyler's face as he boasted about his stolen empire.

Tyler was now sitting in a concrete cell thousands of miles away, wearing a uniform that erased his name. Vanessa was living in an anonymous two-bedroom duplex, learning the hard lessons of humility that she had once forced on others.

And I had found a love that was stronger than greed, fiercer than vengeance, and gentler than the summer wind.

"I don't care about the people who looked down on me, Giovanni," I said, reaching up to gently trace the scar on his jaw—the scar that had brought us together across six years of darkness. "I only care about the man who lifted me up."

Giovanni smiled, dipping his head until his lips met mine in a kiss that tasted of sweet lemons, ocean salt, and a future that belonged entirely to us.

Down on the grass, Lily looked up, clapped her hands in delight, and shouted across the lawn, "Mommy and the pirate are kissing again!"

We both laughed against each other's lips, holding each other tight under the endless, brilliant blue sky.
