Chapter 3 - The Wolf at the Door

The apartment smelled of damp plaster and the cinnamon oatmeal I had prepared for Lily at six in the morning.

"Mommy, did you bring the cake?" Lily asked, sitting cross-legged on our secondhand vinyl sofa. Her golden-brown curls tumbled around her face, framing large, curious eyes that possessed none of Tyler’s coldness.

I pulled the foil-wrapped package from my purse, setting it on the chipped laminate coffee table. "Spun-sugar flowers, just like I promised."

Her squeal of delight was worth every second of Tyler’s insults from the night before. But the illusion of safety shattered thirty minutes later when heavy, impatient fists hammered against our door.

I peered through the peephole. Tyler.

My stomach seized, but I unlatched the chain and opened the door two inches. "What are you doing here, Tyler? You aren't supposed to be within three blocks of my home."

Tyler shoved his shoulder against the wood, forcing the door inward. He was still wearing his tuxedo trousers and a wrinkled dress shirt, smelling of stale bourbon and manic fury.

"Who the hell is he, Jessica?" Tyler hissed, stepping into our cramped living room. His eyes swept across our peeling yellow wallpaper, landing on Lily, who shrank back against the sofa cushions. "Giovanni Fierro? The man who controls half the commercial loans in New York? You expect me to believe you’re sleeping with a titan like that?"

"Get out of my home," I said, my voice dead and level. "Do not speak like that in front of Lily."

"Lily?" Tyler laughed bitterly, glancing at the little girl he had abandoned five years ago. "Look at this dump! You’re playing games, Jess. Did you hire an escort to humiliate me at your sister's wedding? Because that’s what it was, wasn't it? A pathetic stunt!"

"She didn't hire me, Brooks."

The voice didn't come from behind me; it came from the open doorway.

Giovanni Fierro stood framed in the dim hallway of the tenement building. He wore a tailored charcoal wool coat over a slate-gray suit. Flanking him were two hulking men in matching dark suits, their hands folded neatly across their waists.

Tyler spun around, blanching so fast the color drained straight out of his lips. "Mr... Mr. Fierro."

"You are trespassing," Giovanni said calmly, stepping across the threshold. The cramped living room suddenly felt microscopic under his presence. He walked past Tyler as if the man were a speck of dust, stopping directly in front of the sofa.

He crouched down, bringing his massive frame level with Lily. The ruthless edge in his scarred face softened into something astonishingly gentle.

"You must be Lily," Giovanni said softly.

Lily looked at the scar on his chin, then reached out a cautious little finger and tapped it. "Are you a pirate?"

Giovanni didn't flinch. "Sometimes. Only when dealing with bad sailors. I hear you like spun sugar."

Lily nodded vigorously.

Giovanni looked up at me, standing tall once more. "The contract is finalized, Jessica. My attorneys have already filed the registry documents. A car is waiting downstairs to transport your belongings."

"Contract?" Tyler blurted, desperation cracking his facade. "Jessica, what did you do? You sold yourself? Mr. Fierro, you don't know this woman. She’s an opportunist! She trapped me with a pregnancy five years ago to steal my future!"

The temperature in the room plunged below zero.

Giovanni turned slowly. He didn't raise his voice, which made what he said ten times more terrifying.

"Five years ago, Brooks, you forged Jessica's signature on a joint account to drain forty thousand dollars left to her by her late grandmother—money intended for her medical school tuition. You used that capital to buy your initial shares in Sterling & Holt Equity."

Tyler's eyes went round with horror. "That's... that's not true!"

"My forensic auditors verified the transfer at three o'clock this morning," Giovanni continued, taking a slow step toward Tyler. Tyler instinctively backed away until his shoulders hit the plaster wall. "I hold seventy-two percent of Sterling & Holt's debt obligations. At noon today, your board convenes. If you ever breathe the same air as my wife or daughter again, I will call that debt immediately and send your audit to the federal prosecutor."

"She’s Vanessa’s cousin!" Tyler stammered, sweat beading on his forehead. "We're family!"

"You have no family, Brooks," Giovanni said coldly. "Only liabilities. Get out of my sight before I have my men remove you through the fire escape."

Tyler didn't say another word. He bolted through the door, his frantic footsteps echoing down the stairwell like a beaten dog.

Giovanni turned back to me, extending a hand once again. "Pack Lily's clothes, Jessica. Your old life is over."
