Chapter 6 - Blood and Paper

The scandal at the Metropolitan Gala completely destroyed Tyler and Vanessa's social standing. Richard Fierro stripped Tyler of all titles within the logistics firm, while Vanessa was barred from every country club and charity board in the state.

Desperate people, however, are the most dangerous.

Three weeks later, an official court summons arrived at the Greenwich estate.

I stood in Giovanni’s oak-paneled study, staring at the legal document in trembling disbelief. "A custody petition? Tyler filed for sole legal custody of Lily?"

"On grounds of maternal unfitness," Giovanni read from the brief, his voice dangerously low. "He claims your marriage to me is a fraudulent contract designed to conceal illicit earnings, and that our home is an unstable environment for a five-year-old child."

"He abandoned her!" I shouted, tears of pure rage burning my eyes. "He didn't pay a single cent of child support for five years! He didn't even sign her birth certificate because he refused to take the paternity test!"

"He signed an affidavit acknowledging paternity yesterday," Giovanni said, standing up from behind his massive desk. He walked around to where I stood, gripping my shoulders with firm, steady hands. "Look at me, Jessica."

I looked up into his fierce amber eyes.

"Nobody takes Lily from you. Not Tyler. Not the courts. Not God himself. Do you hear me?"

"You don't understand the family court system, Giovanni," I choked out, a tear finally escaping down my cheek. "If Beatrice backs him with money—"

"Beatrice doesn't have money anymore," Giovanni said coldly. "Yesterday morning, the board removed her from the Fierro Trust following an audit of her offshore accounts. She has no leverage. And Tyler Brooks just walked into a trap I’ve been preparing for five years."

The next morning, we sat in the sterile chambers of Judge Eleanor Vance.

Tyler sat across the table, flanked by an aggressive, sharp-suited family attorney. Tyler looked worn, dark circles ringing his eyes, but his sneer was as arrogant as ever.

"Your Honor," Tyler’s lawyer began, "Mr. Brooks is the biological father. He has a stable home, an expectant wife, and a deep desire to rectify past mistakes. Meanwhile, Jessica Hale has entered into a bizarre, hasty marriage with a notorious billionaire whose lifestyle is entirely unsuitable for a young girl."

Judge Vance adjusted her spectacles, looking over her files. "Mr. Fierro, how do you respond to the claim that your marriage is merely a financial arrangement?"

Giovanni didn't flinch. He reached into his leather briefcase and produced a thick, ribbon-bound dossier.

"Your Honor, before we discuss my marriage, we must discuss the character of the petitioner." Giovanni slid the dossier across the bench. "These are five years of encrypted bank records from Tyler Brooks's private Swiss accounts."

Tyler stiffened. "What is that?"

"Five years ago, Mr. Brooks embezzled one hundred and eighty thousand dollars from the Hale family estate when Jessica's father was dying in hospice care," Giovanni stated with clinical precision. "He placed that money into an offshore account registered under his mother’s maiden name. When Jessica became pregnant, he threatened to withhold her father's medical coverage unless she let him walk away without child support."

"That's a lie!" Tyler roared, leaping to his feet. "She has no proof!"

"I don't need Jessica's proof, Brooks. I bought your bank," Giovanni replied, his voice dropping into a register that made the entire room vibrate. "The Swiss federal prosecutor signed the release of these records yesterday at dawn. You are not going home to your pregnant wife today, Tyler. You are going to federal holding for wire fraud, embezzlement, and tax evasion."

Two federal marshals stepped through the heavy courtroom doors.

Tyler's lawyer took one look at the documents, dropped his pen, and slowly stood up, stepping away from his client. "Your Honor... my firm withdraws representation effective immediately."

Tyler collapsed back into his chair, his hands shaking so violently he couldn't even unbutton his collar. "Jessica... please. Tell him to stop. Vanessa is having a baby... we have nothing left!"

I stood up, holding Giovanni’s arm. I looked down at the man who had abandoned my daughter and treated my life like disposable trash.

"You told me I threw away my future, Tyler," I whispered. "You were wrong. I was just waiting for the man who was worthy of sharing it."

May you like

The marshals snapped the cuffs around Tyler's wrists and led him out into the holding cells.
