Chapter 8 - The Desperate Move

When Tyler Brooks learned from his prison cell that Giovanni’s marriage was not a legal sham, but a genuine bond, his final shreds of sanity disintegrated.

Using his one telephone call, Tyler didn't contact Vanessa. He didn't contact his lawyer. He contacted Marcus Vance—a corrupt private investigator who had worked for Beatrice Fierro before her fall.

"I need her hurt," Tyler had rasped through the static-filled prison receiver. "If I am going down, she doesn't get to live in a castle. Take the kid."

It was a Friday afternoon when the trap sprang.

I was at County General, overseeing the transition of the new pediatric wing funded by the Fierro endowment. The hospital corridors were bustling with construction crews and nurses. Lily was in the hospital’s day-care center on the ground floor, under the watch of two of Giovanni’s private security guards.

At 3:15 PM, the fire alarm screamed.

Strobe lights flashed white against the walls, and automatic fire doors slammed shut throughout the pediatric wing. Panic erupted as patients, visitors, and staff flooded the emergency exits.

"Code Red, ground floor," the intercom squawked. "All personnel evacuate immediately."

My maternal instincts overrode every professional protocol. "Lily!"

I abandoned my clipboard and ran down the stairwell, pushing past orderly carts and fleeing visitors. When I burst through the double doors of the daycare center, the room was empty except for a thick haze of smoke from a deliberately set trash fire.

On the floor lay one of Giovanni’s guards, unconscious with a head wound. The other was nowhere to be seen.

"Lily!" I screamed, terror clawing at my throat.

"Mommy!"

The tiny cry came from the underground parking garage beneath the daycare.

I sprinted through the utility door, my rubber hospital shoes skidding on the wet concrete. In the dim light of the garage, near an idling black sedan, stood a burly man in a maintenance uniform, his hand clamped firmly over Lily’s mouth. Beside him stood Vanessa.

Vanessa looked hollow, her designer clothes replaced by an oversized gray hoodie, her pregnant belly bulging awkwardly. Her eyes were sunken, crazed with desperation.

"Give me my daughter, Vanessa!" I screamed, stopping ten feet away.

"You took everything from me!" Vanessa shrieked, her voice echoing off the concrete pillars. "Tyler is in prison! My father won't speak to me! The baby inside me has no future because of you!"

"Tyler put himself in prison!" I pleaded, taking a cautious step forward. "Vanessa, look at Lily! She’s your blood! She’s a child!"

"She’s our leverage," Marcus Vance grunted, pulling a heavy wrench from his coat. "Tyler wired half a million from an undisclosed account. We get the kid to Canada, and Fierro pays ten million to get her back. Back up, lady, or I crack her skull."

Lily sobbed, her tiny fingers kicking uselessly against the brute's chest.

"Let her go," I said, my voice turning deathly cold as my pediatric trauma training kicked in. Adrenaline surged through my veins. "Take me instead. I am Fierro’s wife. He will pay fifty million for me. A five-year-old will only slow you down."

Vance hesitated, glancing at Vanessa. "She's right. The wife is worth ten times more."

"No!" Vanessa screamed. "Kill the brat! Let her feel what it's like to lose everything!"

Vance raised the wrench.

A deafening roar shattered the concrete silence.

A black armored SUV smashed through the parking gate at fifty miles per hour, drifting violently across the slick pavement. Before the car even fully stopped, the passenger door flew open.

Giovanni Fierro stepped out. He wasn't wearing a suit. He wore tactical black, his scarred face twisted into an expression of absolute, murderous fury.

Behind him, four armed security operators flooded the garage with laser sights leveled.

"Drop the child," Giovanni said. The sound of his voice was like a guillotine dropping.

Vance panicked. He tossed Lily aside like a ragdoll and lunged toward the sedan.

I dove across the concrete, catching Lily against my chest just as her head nearly hit the curb. "I've got you, baby! I've got you!"

Giovanni moved like a shadow. Before Vance could reach the driver's seat, Giovanni’s fist connected with his jaw with the sound of cracking bone. Vance crumpled to the floor, unconscious before he even hit the pavement.

Vanessa screamed, backing up against the wall, holding her belly. "Don't touch me! I’m pregnant! Don't touch me!"

Giovanni didn't touch her. He stood over her like a towering mountain of retribution, his amber eyes burning with disgust.

"You will give birth under the supervision of state corrections officers," Giovanni said coldly. "And the moment that child is born, it will be placed with a family that actually understands the meaning of the word."

Sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder with every passing second.

Giovanni turned away from the cowering woman and knelt beside me on the cold concrete. His large, trembling hands pulled both Lily and me into his chest, burying his face in my hair.

May you like

"You’re safe," he whispered, his voice cracking with an emotion I had never heard in him before. "I have you. I will always have you."
