Chapter 10 - A New DawnSix months later.

The morning sun streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows of a beautiful oceanfront house on the coast of Maine. The air smelled of salt water, wild pine, and freedom.

I stood on the wide wooden porch, holding my two-month-old daughter, Lily, gently against my chest. Her soft breathing was a peaceful rhythm against the sound of the crashing waves below. Nearby, two-year-old Emma was laughing joyfully as she chased a butterfly across the grass, supervised by my father, who was sitting on a garden bench with a copy of the morning newspaper.

Trevor’s trial had ended three weeks ago.

Faced with overwhelming video evidence, financial audits that revealed he had been stealing from my trust fund, and the collapse of his uncle’s legal protection, Trevor had pled guilty to all charges. The judge sentenced him to twelve years in state prison without the possibility of parole for the first eight.

A full civil court decree had stripped him of all parental rights, granted me a permanent restraining order, and restored my birth name: Rebecca Lawson.

My mouth had healed completely thanks to reconstructive dental surgery, but the small, faint scar near my lip remained—a quiet reminder not of my trauma, but of the day I chose to fight back.

"Breakfast is ready, sweetie," my father said, standing up from the bench and walking over to sweep Emma into his arms, making her giggle hysterically.

"Thanks, Dad," I smiled, looking out at the endless horizon of the blue ocean.

I had used part of my trust fund to establish The Haven Foundation—a nationwide network offering legal protection, safe housing, and medical care for victims of domestic abuse who felt trapped and hopeless, just like I once had.

I looked down at baby Lily, who opened her bright, clear eyes and looked up at me with a tiny, innocent smile.

The nightmare was over. The monster was behind bars. And for the first time in my life, my daughters and I were truly home.
