Chapter 4 - Safe HouseThe private wing of St. Jude's Hospital was locked down under heavy security. My father had bought the entire floor for the night to ensure complete privacy.

Within hours, a team of top specialists worked to stabilize me and my baby. An obstetrician performed a thorough ultrasound while I gripped my father’s hand. The monitor hummed, and soon, the steady, rhythmic sound of a tiny heartbeat filled the room.

"The baby is resilient, Mrs. Vance," the doctor said gently, wiping the gel off my swollen bump. "Placenta is intact, no signs of abruption. But your stress levels are dangerously high, and you have severe blunt force trauma to your jaw."

A oral surgeon worked for two hours under local anesthesia to clean the lacerations, realign my jawbone, and place a temporary prosthetic over the missing tooth. Every touch brought searing pain, but compared to the emotional agony of the past five years, it was nothing.

While I rested, my father stayed at my bedside, working silently on his laptop. The room smelled of antiseptic and fresh roses he had ordered to cover the medicinal odor.

"Emma is asleep upstairs in the private suite with nurse Sarah," my father said softly when he noticed me moving. "She's safe, Becca."

"Dad..." I choked out, tears finally streaming down my cheeks, uninhibited by fear. "I'm so sorry. I hid it for so long. I thought... I thought I could fix him."

Richard set his laptop aside and leaned close, taking my hand in both of his. "You have nothing to apologize for, Rebecca. The guilt belongs entirely to that monster. I am the one who should apologize. I was so consumed by expansion, by business, that I didn't see the signs. I let you suffer in silence."

"He told me nobody would believe me," I whispered, touching my bandaged lip. "He said you would be ashamed of me for having a failed marriage."

"Ashamed?" My father’s eyes flared with intense emotion. "You are a Lawson. You are my daughter. There is nothing you could ever do that would make me ashamed of you. But what Trevor did... he built his own execution stake tonight."

Before I could ask what he meant, my father's chief legal counsel, Vance Sterling, stepped into the room. He carried a thick leather binder.

"Mr. Lawson, Mrs. Vance," Vance said with a formal nod. "We have a situation. Trevor hasn't gone quietly into the night. An hour ago, he filed an emergency court motion claiming you kidnapped his daughter and demanding immediate physical custody, citing your alleged 'instability' and 'self-inflicted injuries.'"

My heart slammed against my ribs. "Self-inflicted?!"

"He claims you had a manic episode, smashed the house, hurt yourself, and that your father pulled a weapon to abduct Emma," Vance explained calmly. "He's trying to control the narrative before we file criminal charges."

My father didn't panic. He simply looked at Vance and asked, "Is the grand jury convened?"

"They will be by eight o'clock tomorrow morning," Vance replied with a cruel smile. "And we have something Trevor doesn't know about."
