Chapter 2 - The Mask FallsMy fingers wrapped around the brass handle. Trevor stepped back, his eyes wild, his posture rigid as a iron bar. He smoothed down his collar, adjusting his demeanor in a split second. The terrifying monster who had just shattered my jaw was suddenly attempting to wear the mask of a devoted husband.

"Be smart, Rebecca," Trevor breathed under his breath. "Think about what happens after he leaves."
I unlocked the deadbolt and pulled the heavy mahogany door open.
Richard Lawson stood on the porch in a bespoke charcoal suit, a wrapped gift box in one hand and a soft smile on his face. He had driven straight from the executive board meeting of Lawson Global Enterprises—a multi-billion-dollar empire built on grit and absolute discipline.
"Happy early anniversary, sweetie, I was passing through the neighborhood and—"
My father’s sentence died in his throat.
The color drained from his face, leaving him as pale as paper. The gift box slipped from his hands, clattering onto the entryway floor. His sharp gray eyes took in the horrific scene before him: my blood-soaked white maternity shirt, my swollen, deformed lip, the gap where my front tooth used to be, and eighteen-month-old Emma clinging frantically to my knees, her face smeared with my blood.
"Rebecca..." My father's voice, usually commanding enough to silence boardrooms of executives, cracked into a whispered gasp. "My God... what happened to you?"
Behind me, Trevor stepped into the foyer, his palms open, his expression tailored to project panicked concern.
"Richard! Thank God you're here!" Trevor exclaimed, his voice trembling with well-rehearsed distress. "She tripped! She was coming down the stairs holding Emma, lost her balance, and took a terrible fall! I was just about to carry her to the car to get her to the emergency room!"
It was a masterclass in deception. Calm, reasonable, and utterly horrifying.
For five long years, I would have nodded along. I would have lowered my head, choked back my tears, and validated his lies just to keep the peace. I had been groomed by emotional abuse to believe that exposure meant total destruction.
My father rushed forward, kneeling in front of me, his hands gently framing my bloodied face without touching the severe injuries. Tears welled up in the eyes of a man I had only ever seen stand unfazed against ruthless business tycoons.
"Rebecca, look at me," Richard commanded softly, his voice trembling with raw grief. "Tell me the truth. Did you fall?"
I looked at Trevor. He was giving me that subtle, lethal look—the tiny tilt of his jaw that promised unspeakable retribution if I crossed him.
Then I felt my unborn child move inside me. I felt Emma’s warm tears soaking through my jeans. I realized that if I walked out that door under Trevor's narrative, I would eventually leave this house in a body bag.
I met my father's eyes. I spat a mouthful of dark blood onto the hardwood floor between us.
"He hit me," I said, my voice slurred through the swelling, but clear enough to cut through the quiet house like a surgeon's blade. "He knocked me down while I was holding Emma. He broke my tooth, Dad."
The silence that followed was suffocating.
Trevor's face warped from fake panic to absolute terror. "She's hysterical, Richard! She's pregnant and confused! You know how emotional she gets—"
"Shut up," my father whispered.

He didn't raise his voice. He didn't shout. But the tone was so icy, so full of lethal intent, that Trevor's jaw snapped shut instantly.
Richard stood up slowly. The gentle, loving father disappeared, replaced by a ruthless billionaire whose sole creation—his precious daughter—had been battered by a coward.
