Chapter 3 - The War Room(Length: ~1800 words)

While Julian was being processed in a cold holding cell at the 4th Precinct, I was sitting in the executive conference room on the thirty-second floor of the Vance Building downtown.

The room was quiet, lit by the warm glow of desk lamps and the glittering expanse of the city skyline outside the floor-to-ceiling windows. A thick white bandage covered the left side of my jaw, but beneath the bandage, the swelling had begun to go down.

Helena Marsh walked into the room, setting her leather briefcase on the long mahogany conference table.

"He’s locked up, Clara," Helena said, sitting down across from me and pouring herself a glass of water. "Bail has been set at one hundred thousand dollars due to the severity of the burns and the documented flight risk. And since all of his personal and corporate accounts are frozen under the receivership order, he won't be paying it anytime soon."

I took a slow breath, looking down at the financial spreadsheets laid out before me. "What about Selene?"

"Selene is currently throwing a hysterical tantrum at a cheap motel near the airport," Helena replied with a faint, sharp smile. "She tried to use three different credit cards to pay for a luxury suite downtown, and every single one of them was declined. She spent two hours calling every associate her family knows, but word travels fast in this city. No one is willing to touch the Vance family right now."

"Good," I said softly.

For years, Selene had treated me like a lower-class servant who happened to win the lottery by marrying her brother. She had mocked my wardrobe, insulted my late father’s memory, and demanded thousands of dollars for her vanity projects while treating me with absolute disdain. Seeing her world crumble was not just satisfying; it was justice.

"Now," Helena said, pulling a thick blue folder from her briefcase. "Let's talk about the real battle: Vance Private Capital."

She opened the folder, revealing organizational charts detailing the corporate structure of my father's firm.

"Julian assumed that because he was named Acting Managing Director three years ago, he held the voting rights to the firm," Helena explained, pointing her silver pen at the chart. "What he didn't realize—because he never bothered to read the secondary bylaws—is that his appointment was conditional upon maintaining a spotless ethical record and holding a valid marriage contract with the primary shareholder: you."

"The moment he was arrested for felony assault," I noted, "he triggered the automatic forfeiture clause."

"Precisely," Helena agreed. "Tomorrow morning at nine o'clock, the Board of Directors is holding an emergency meeting. Julian’s loyalists on the board—specifically his chief financial officer, Marcus Sterling—are going to try to claim that your father's trust is frozen due to the divorce proceedings. They want to appoint Marcus as interim CEO to cover up the missing three hundred and eighty thousand dollars."

I leaned back in my leather chair, resting my chin on my hand. "Marcus Sterling was the one who signed off on those unauthorized wire transfers to Selene's beauty studio LLC, wasn't he?"

"He was," Helena confirmed. "He took a fifteen percent kickback on every illegal transfer Julian authorized. Marcus thinks you're just a traumatized victim hiding in a hospital room. He has no idea you're walking into that boardroom tomorrow morning."

I looked at my reflection in the dark glass window of the conference room.

The quiet, meek girl who had let Julian rule her life for eight years was dead. She had burned away in the kitchen the moment that scalding coffee hit her skin. In her place stood my father's daughter—a woman who knew the exact value of her legacy, and who was fully prepared to destroy anyone who tried to steal it.

"Call our security team, Helena," I said, my voice steady and cold as steel. "Tell them I want Marcus Sterling's access badge revoked at eight-thirty tomorrow morning. And tell the board to make sure there are extra chairs in the room."

"Consider it done, Clara," Helena smiled.
