Chapter 5 - The Bail Hearing(Length: ~1800 words)

Three days later.

The Suffolk County Courthouse was packed with local journalists, photographers, and curious onlookers. The scandal involving Julian Vance had become the most talked-about story in Boston's business community—a dramatic tale of corporate greed, hidden wealth, and violent domestic abuse.

Inside Courtroom 302, Julian sat at the defense table.

He was wearing an ill-fitting gray suit provided by his public defender. His hair was messy, his eyes bloodshot, and his usual arrogant, handsome demeanor had completely vanished. Beside him sat Selene, wearing plain clothes, dabbing her eyes with a crumpled tissue.

Sitting in the front row of the gallery was me.

I wore an elegant cream-colored coat, my hair styled impeccably, the bandage on my jaw replaced with a small, discreet medical patch. Beside me sat Helena Marsh and two of our lead corporate attorneys.

"All rise," the bailiff called out as Judge Harold Myers took the bench.

Judge Myers was a veteran magistrate known for his zero-tolerance policy regarding violent crimes and financial corruption. He adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses and looked down at the defense table with an icy stare.

"We are here today for the bail review hearing in the matter of the State v. Julian Vance," Judge Myers announced. "Mr. Vance faces charges of felony domestic battery, aggravated assault, and corporate embezzlement."

Julian’s public defender stood up, clearing his throat nervously. "Your Honor, my client has no prior criminal record. He is a respected businessman in this community. We ask the court to reduce his bail to twenty-five thousand dollars and grant him pre-trial release so he can prepare his defense and address his corporate obligations."

"Corporate obligations?" Judge Myers raised an eyebrow. "Counselor, according to the latest filings from Vance Private Capital, your client has been stripped of all executive authority and is currently facing a civil lawsuit for four hundred thousand dollars in embezzled funds."

Julian flinched, looking frantically back toward the gallery. His eyes locked onto mine.

For a second, I saw a flicker of the old, arrogant Julian—the man who believed he could manipulate me with a smile or a soft apology. He gave me a desperate, pleading look, mouthing the words: Please, Clara.

I didn't blink. I didn't move a muscle. I looked through him as if he were made of glass.

"Your Honor," the state prosecutor spoke up, standing from her table. "The state strongly opposes any reduction in bail. Furthermore, we request that bail be revoked entirely."

"On what grounds, Prosecutor?" Judge Myers asked.

The prosecutor opened a leather folder. "We have received new forensic evidence from the victim's legal team. Two nights before the assault, Mr. Vance attempted to purchase a one-way international flight to Dubai using a secondary credit card registered under a fraudulent offshore account. He is a clear and immediate flight risk."

Julian’s jaw dropped. He turned to his lawyer, whispering frantically, "Where did they get that?! How did they find that card?!"

He had forgotten that I had access to all his laptop browser histories and encrypted emails—data I had handed over to Helena Marsh weeks ago.

"In addition," the prosecutor continued, "we have audio recordings captured by the victim's home security system on the morning of the attack. With the court's permission, we would like to play a fifteen-second clip."

"Permission granted," Judge Myers said.

The prosecutor tapped a button on her laptop. The courtroom sound system crackled to life, and Julian’s voice echoed clearly through the silent room:

“You don't refuse me in my own house. Obey me, or pack a bag. Your choice.”

Followed immediately by the sharp sound of a heavy mug slamming across the table, my stifled gasp of pain, and Selene’s callous laughter in the background.

Gasping sounds rippled through the gallery. Several reporters began writing furiously in their notebooks.

Selene buried her face in her hands, sobbing loudly in humiliation, while Julian sank down into his chair, his face completely drained of color.

Judge Myers slammed his hand down on the bench, his face dark with fury.

"Mr. Vance," Judge Myers said, his voice cold as ice. "I have seen many domestic abuse cases in my thirty years on the bench, but your complete lack of remorse and blatant arrogance is appalling. Bail is hereby revoked. You will remain in custody at the county facility pending your criminal trial."

CRACK!

The judge's gavel struck the wooden block.

"No! Your Honor, please!" Julian screamed, jumping up from his chair as two armed bailiffs immediately stepped forward, grabbing his arms and forcing him back down. "Clara! Tell them! Tell them it was an accident! Clara, please! I love you!"

He thrashed wildly against the officers, tears streaming down his cheeks as the heavy iron handcuffs were snapped around his wrists.

May you like

I stood up slowly from my seat in the gallery, smoothing down my coat. I looked at my husband one last time as he was dragged toward the side door leading to the holding cells.

"I know you do, Julian," I whispered quietly to myself as the heavy door slammed shut behind him. "You loved my money."
