Chapter 7 - The Trial(Length: ~1800 words)

Six months later.
The high-stakes criminal trial of Julian and Selene Vance reached its dramatic climax at the Suffolk County Courthouse.
The courtroom was filled to absolute capacity. Financial analysts, media reporters, and members of the public packed the gallery, eager to witness the final judgment of the scandal that had rocked Boston’s business elite.
Julian and Selene sat at the defense table, wearing matching orange inmate jumpsuits.
Six months of county detention had destroyed what was left of their vanity. Julian looked hollowed out, gray-haired, and thin, his posture completely broken. Selene sat beside him with her head bowed, weeping quietly into her hands.
Across the aisle sat my legal team and me. I wore a tailored midnight-blue dress suit, my posture upright, my jaw completely healed, leaving only a tiny, faint silver scar near my neck—a permanent reminder of the day I freed myself.
Judge Harold Myers presided over the bench.
"We are here today for the final sentencing," Judge Myers declared, his authoritative voice echoing off the high ceilings. "The jury has returned unanimous guilty verdicts on all counts."
A heavy silence fell over the room.
"Julian Vance," Judge Myers began, looking down at my husband with cold disdain. "You engaged in a systematic campaign of corporate fraud, financial embezzlement, and brutal physical violence against your wife—a woman who trusted you with her life and her family's legacy. You showed no remorse, no restraint, and no basic human decency."
Julian trembled, his cuffed hands shaking against the table.
"On the counts of felony domestic battery and aggravated assault, I sentence you to seven years in state prison," Judge Myers announced. "On the counts of grand larceny and corporate embezzlement, I sentence you to an additional eight years, to run consecutively."
Fifteen years in maximum security.
Julian gasped, clutching his chest as if he couldn't breathe. "Fifteen... fifteen years?!" he choked out, looking toward the gallery with wide, terrified eyes.
"Additionally," Judge Myers added, "you are ordered to pay four hundred and twenty thousand dollars in full restitution to Vance Private Capital."
The judge then turned his attention to Selene.
"Selene Vance, for your active participation in corporate tax fraud, grand larceny, and conspiracy, I sentence you to five years in state prison."
Selene let out a piercing scream of despair, burying her face in her arms on the table.
CRACK!
The judge's wooden gavel struck the block with absolute finality.
"Court is adjourned."
As armed bailiffs stepped forward to escort Julian and Selene away toward the holding transport, Julian turned around one last time. He looked directly at me, tears streaming down his pale, sunken face.
"Clara..." he cried out, his voice cracking horribly. "Clara, please... forgive me! I was wrong! Please!"
I stood from my seat in the gallery. I looked into the eyes of the man who had tried to crush my spirit, steal my father's work, and burn my face over a debit card.

I didn't answer him. I didn't need to. The law had spoken, and justice was served.
I turned my back on him as the heavy iron doors slammed shut, cutting off his desperate cries forever.
