Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Coup(Length: ~1800 words)

At eight-forty-five the following morning, the executive boardroom of Vance Private Capital was buzzing with tense energy.
Marcus Sterling, a sharp-featured man in a five-thousand-dollar suit, stood at the head of the long marble table, shuffling a stack of corporate reports. Surrounding him were seven senior board members, all discussing the shocking news that had broken across local financial news outlets an hour earlier: VANCE PRIVATE CAPITAL EXECUTIVE ARRESTED IN BRUTAL DOMESTIC BATTERY CASE.
"Gentlemen, please! Settle down!" Marcus shouted, clapping his hands to command the room. "I know the news about Julian Vance is distressing, but we must maintain order. Julian is currently dealing with a private domestic matter..."
"Private domestic matter?!" one of the older board members snapped. "He’s in a county jail cell, Marcus! The company's stock is dropping four points in pre-market trading!"
"Which is precisely why we need to act decisively!" Marcus countered smoothly, leaning over the table. "Under Clause 12 of the corporate bylaws, in the event of an executive's incapacity, the board has the immediate authority to appoint an Interim Managing Director. I have already drafted the emergency resolution to step into the role. Once I take control, we can issue a press release stating that Julian has been removed, stabilizing the market."
"And what about Thomas Vance's daughter?" another board member asked. "Clara controls sixty percent of the voting shares through the family trust!"
Marcus let out a dismissive laugh. "Clara is a timid graphic designer who knows nothing about high-finance corporate restructuring. She’s currently hysterical and recovering from minor injuries. I’ve already instructed our legal team to file an emergency petition to freeze her trust voting rights until the divorce is finalized. She won't be a problem."
Before Marcus could finish his sentence, the heavy frosted-glass doors of the boardroom swung wide open.
A crisp, commanding silence fell over the room like a heavy blanket.
I walked into the boardroom.
I wore a tailored black pantsuit, my dark hair pulled back into a flawless, professional bun, and a neat white medical bandage covering my jawline. Walking right beside me was Helena Marsh, accompanied by two imposing private security officers holding leather document satchels.
Marcus froze, his mouth half-open, his face turning a sickly shade of pale gray. "Clara? What... what are you doing here? This is a private executive board meeting!"
I didn't answer him immediately. I walked slowly down the length of the marble table, my high heels clicking against the hardwood floor with precise, deliberate rhythm. Every eye in the room was locked onto me.
I stopped right at the head of the table, looking down at the leather chair where my father used to sit—the chair Marcus had been preparing to sit in.
"This is my company, Marcus," I said, my voice calm, clear, and echoing off the walls. "There is nothing private in this building that does not belong to me."
"Clara, listen to me," Marcus stammered, trying to quickly recover his slick corporate composure. "You're upset, and understandably so after what happened with Julian. But corporate management requires experience. You should be at home resting while we handle this crisis..."
"The only crisis in this building, Marcus," Helena Marsh interrupted, stepping forward and dropping a thick stack of blue folders onto the marble table in front of each board member, "is the systematic embezzlement of three hundred and eighty thousand dollars from the corporate reserve accounts."
The board members gasped, frantically opening the folders.
"What is the meaning of this?!" an older director demanded, reading the top audit sheet. "Authorization signatures from Marcus Sterling... transfers to a beauty salon LLC owned by Selene Vance?!"
"That's a fabrication!" Marcus yelled, his face flushing bright red as sweat broke out across his forehead. "She's trying to frame me to take control of the firm!"
I leaned over the table, looking Marcus straight in his panicked eyes.
"I don't need to frame you, Marcus," I said softly. "My father built this firm on transparency. Every transaction you signed off on was logged on our secure cloud server. The state prosecutor’s office received certified copies of those logs twenty minutes ago."
Marcus stumbled back a step, grabbing the edge of the table as his legs gave out.
"As of eight-thirty this morning," I announced, turning my gaze to the rest of the board members, "Marcus Sterling’s employment with Vance Private Capital is terminated for cause. Furthermore, under my authority as sixty-percent majority shareholder, I am officially revoking Julian Vance's executive appointment and resuming my role as Chairwoman of the Board."
Silence hung thick in the room. Not a single board member raised an objection. They looked at the evidence in front of them, then looked up at me—a woman standing tall with a bandage on her face, commanding the room with absolute, unshakeable authority.
"Security," I said, without taking my eyes off Marcus. "Escort Mr. Sterling out of the building. He has ten minutes to clear his desk under supervision."
The two security guards stepped forward, grabbing Marcus by his arms.
"Clara! Please! Work with me! It was Julian’s idea!" Marcus screamed as he was pulled toward the glass doors, weeping frantically. "He forced me to sign those transfers! He said he’d fire me if I didn't!"
"You should have said no," I replied coldly as the glass doors shut behind him.

I pulled out the heavy leather chair at the head of the table and sat down in my father's seat for the first time in my life. I looked around at the remaining board members, who were sitting up straight, watching me with profound newfound respect.
"Now, gentlemen," I said, opening my master folder. "Let's talk about restructuring our portfolio."
