Chapter 1 - The Broken Rose(800 words)

The Grand Foyer of the Callahan Mansion in Greenwich, Connecticut was designed to make people feel insignificant. Floor-to-ceiling Italian marble, a crystal chandelier the size of a minivan, and a sweeping double staircase gave the impression of a royal palace. But for Adeze, it was just four thousand square feet of stone she had to polish on her knees every single day.

For three years, the Callahan family knew her only as "the maid." Nobody asked her name. Nobody knew she held a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Lagos, Nigeria. Nobody knew that every dollar she earned went straight back home to support her five-year-old daughter, Kemi, who was currently living with her grandmother. To the Callahans, Adeze was invisible—a ghost in a crisp pink uniform that swept away their trash and served their wine.

That afternoon, the house was filled with the sharp, aristocratic laughter of twelve high-society women. Vivian Callahan, the second wife of real estate mogul Richard Callahan, was hosting her annual spring luncheon. Adeze had spent six agonizing hours in the kitchen meticulously hand-crafting sugar roses for a three-tier velvet cake. Each delicate rose was a quiet testament to her patience and resilience.

Then, disaster struck.

Between the second course and dessert, Chelsea—Vivian’s twenty-six-year-old daughter—burst into the dining hall, hyperventilating. "It’s gone!" Chelsea shrieked, her voice echoing off the high ceilings. "My diamond tennis bracelet! It was on the marble counter in the powder room!"

The room went dead silent. Vivian’s eyes, cold and calculated beneath her heavy makeup, scanned the servants. They landed instantly on Adeze, who was standing quietly near the dessert cart holding a silver tray.

"Who else was in that powder room?" Vivian asked, her tone dripping with venom. "Adeze, darling... did you happen to see anything?"

"No, ma'am," Adeze replied softly, keeping her eyes fixed on the floor. "I haven't been upstairs since nine this morning."

"Search her," Vivian commanded flatly.

Adeze’s heart hammered against her ribs. "Ma'am, please. I didn't take anything. You can check my pockets. You can search my room in the servant quarters—"

"I said, search her!" Vivian barked, stepping forward.

Chelsea, overwhelmed by rage and fueled by her mother’s cruelty, grabbed a heavy wooden baseball bat from the ornamental umbrella stand near the foyer. It was an old boyhood souvenir belonging to Daniel Callahan, left untouched for decades. Lost in a blind frenzy, Chelsea swung the bat wildly at Adeze.

Adeze dropped to her knees on the cold marble, throwing her hands over her head. The heavy wood grazed her shoulder, sending a jolt of pain through her arm, but the emotional strike hurt far worse. Three years of buried dignity shattered in a single instant.

"Please!" Adeze sobbed, pressed against the cold stone floor. "Please stop! I have a daughter... I swear I didn't take it!"

Vivian stepped over, raising her hand to strike Adeze across the face—

The heavy front door swung open. Daniel Callahan, thirty-four years old, jet-lagged and carrying his leather briefcase, froze on the threshold. For three agonizing seconds, nobody moved. The golden light of the chandelier illuminated the horrifying scene: a terrified maid on her knees, Chelsea holding a raised bat, and Vivian with her hand poised to strike.

"What..." Daniel’s voice trembled with a terrifying, dangerous calm, "...is going on in my house?"
