Chapter 4 - The Video(1,800 words)

The Callahan Estate study was lined with mahogany bookshelves, oil paintings of previous generations, and a massive glass desk housing three state-of-the-art security monitors. Detective Thomas stood behind Daniel, while Vivian, Chelsea, and Adeze waited near the doorway. The room was deathly quiet except for the hum of the computer towers.

"Opening the south wing corridor feed," Daniel said, typing in his administrator passcode. "Time stamp: two-fifteen PM today."

On the primary monitor, a crisp, 4K video feed lit up. The camera angled directly down the wide marble hallway leading to the powder room. The footage showed the party in full swing. Guests in expensive dresses were mingling, carrying champagne flutes.

"Fast forward to two-twenty-five," Detective Thomas instructed.

Daniel dragged the slider forward. At two-twenty-seven PM, the screen showed Chelsea walking down the hallway toward the powder room. She was holding a martini glass in one hand and her phone in the other.

"There!" Chelsea pointed aggressively at the screen. "See? That's when I went in!"

"Watch what happens next," Daniel said, keeping his eyes glued to the display.

Two minutes later, at two-twenty-nine PM, Chelsea emerged from the powder room. But as she walked back toward the living room, the camera captured a crucial, undeniable detail in high definition: she was still wearing the diamond tennis bracelet on her left wrist.

Chelsea gasped. "What?! No... wait!"

"Hold on," Detective Thomas leaned in closer. "Zoom in on her left hand at two-thirty-one PM."

Daniel zoomed in on the footage. At two-thirty-one PM, Chelsea walked out toward the terrace. She paused near the heavy oak coat rack, reached into her pocket, and handed something small and shiny directly to a man wearing a dark tailored suit—a man who was not a guest at the party.

"Who is that?" Detective Thomas asked, pointing at the stranger on the screen.

Chelsea’s face went completely drain of color. "I... I don't know! A guest's husband?"

"That’s Julian Vance," Daniel said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register. "He’s a high-stakes pawn dealer from Manhattan. I know his face because my father banned him from our hotels two years ago for illegal gambling connections."

The footage continued to play. On screen, Julian Vance accepted the diamond bracelet from Chelsea, slipped her a thick manila envelope, and walked out through the side terrace gates.

The entire study fell into a stunned silence.

Adeze gasped softly, holding her hand over her mouth. She had been framed—not because of a mistake, but as a cover-up for a desperate black-market sale.

Detective Thomas turned slowly away from the monitor to face Chelsea. "Miss Callahan. Care to explain why you were handing a fifty-five-thousand-dollar piece of jewelry to a known pawn broker in your back garden?"

"It... it isn't what it looks like!" Chelsea stammered, backing away toward her mother. "Mom, tell them! I was... I was getting it appraised! Julian was just appraising it!"

"Appraising it in exchange for a cash envelope?" Daniel stood up from his desk, his presence towering over the room. "You sold your bracelet to pay off your gambling debts, didn't you, Chelsea? Just like you did last year in Miami."

"Chelsea!" Vivian shouted, though her voice lacked conviction. "Is this true?!"

"I needed the money!" Chelsea burst into hysterics, dropping her head into her hands. "I owed eighty grand to a bookie in Atlantic City! They said they were going to come to the house if I didn't pay by this weekend! I had to sell the bracelet! I was going to tell Dad it was lost, but then Mom blamed the maid and... and it was just easier to go along with it!"

Adeze felt a cold shiver run down her spine. It was just easier to go along with it. They were willing to send an innocent woman to prison, ruin her reputation, destroy her family's future, and deport her back across the ocean—simply because it was "easier" than admitting a spoiled brat had a gambling problem.

Detective Thomas took out his notepad, his expression hardened. "Filing a false police report is a class D felony in the state of Connecticut, Miss Callahan. Accusing an employee of a crime you staged carries severe legal consequences."

"Detective, please!" Vivian stepped in front of her daughter, her cool composure completely shattered. "We don't need to involve the courts in a family matter! We will compensate Adeze! We will pay her a generous bonus! Just... don't arrest my daughter!"

Daniel walked out from behind the desk and stood directly in front of Vivian and Chelsea. His eyes were cold, burning with a deep, righteous anger.

"No, Vivian," Daniel said softly. "You don't get to buy your way out of this one. You assaulted an innocent woman in this house. You framed her. You treated her like trash."

He turned to Detective Thomas. "Detective, process the report for the false police accusation. And while you're at it, Adeze has full grounds to press charges for physical assault against Chelsea for swinging that bat."

May you like

Chelsea shrieked, collapsing into a chair in tears. "Daniel, please! Dad will ruin me!"

"You ruined yourself," Daniel snapped. He then turned his back on them and walked over to Adeze, looking at her with profound respect. "Adeze... come with me. You are done working for these people."
