Chapter 8 - The Reunion(1,800 words)

Terminal 4 at John F. Kennedy International Airport was buzzing with energy as international flights arrived from all over the world. Adeze stood near the international arrivals gate, her fingers clutching a colorful sign that read: WELCOME HOME, KEMI!
Daniel stood right beside her, wearing a comfortable sweater and holding a massive teddy bear he had bought at the airport gift shop.
Adeze couldn't keep her feet still. She paced back and forth, checking her watch every ten seconds. It had been three long years—one thousand and ninety-five days—since she had held her daughter in her arms. Three years of brief WhatsApp video calls, poor internet connections, and tearful goodnights across six time zones.
"Calm down," Daniel said softly, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "The flight landed twenty minutes ago. They’re just clearing customs."
"I can't believe it's happening," Adeze whispered, looking up at him. "Every time I dreamed of this day, something always went wrong. I was so afraid I would never see her face in person again."
"No more fear," Daniel smiled warmly. "You built this moment with your own sacrifices. You earned this."
Suddenly, the sliding glass doors of the customs hall opened. A flight attendant stepped through, holding the hand of a small, beautiful five-year-old girl with braided hair, bright dark eyes, and a bright yellow dress.
Adeze stopped breathing.
"Kemi!" Adeze gasped.
The little girl looked around the crowded arrival hall, confused by the noise and lights, until her eyes locked onto Adeze. Her small face lit up with instant recognition.
"Mommy!" Kemi screamed.
She broke free from the flight attendant’s hand and ran as fast as her small legs could carry her across the polished floor.
Adeze dropped her sign, dropped to her knees, and opened her arms wide. Kemi launched herself into her mother's chest, wrapping her tiny arms around Adeze’s neck with all the strength in her body.
"Mommy! Mommy!" Kemi cried, burying her face into Adeze’s shoulder.
Adeze pulled her child close, weeping uncontrollably, kissing Kemi’s cheeks, her hair, her hands. She buried her face in her daughter’s neck, breathing in the sweet, familiar scent of home.
"My baby... my precious girl," Adeze sobbed, holding Kemi so tightly it felt as if she would never let go. "I'm so sorry I was gone for so long. I missed you so much... I missed you every single day!"
"Grandma said you were building a big house for us," Kemi whispered back, wiping her mother’s tears with her small thumb. "Are you queen of the big house now, Mommy?"
Adeze laughed through her tears, hugging her close. "No, my love. But we are safe now. We are together."
Daniel stepped forward, wiping a stray tear from his own eye. He knelt down beside them and offered the giant teddy bear to Kemi.
"Hi, Kemi," Daniel said gently. "I'm Daniel. I'm a friend of your mom's."
Kemi’s eyes went wide as she looked at the giant bear, then at Daniel. She reached out and took the bear, hugging it tight. "Thank you, mister! Is he coming to our house too?"
"He sure is," Daniel grinned. "And so are you."

As they walked back to the luxury SUV parked at the curb, Daniel loaded Kemi’s small pink suitcase into the trunk. He held the passenger door open for Adeze, who sat with Kemi snuggled tightly in her lap.
Before closing the door, Daniel looked at Adeze. Their eyes met, sharing a moment of deep, unspoken connection that had been growing steadily over the past month. In that moment, Daniel realized that bringing Adeze and Kemi together was the proudest achievement of his entire life.
