Chapter 11 - The Phantom of the Ash

Three days later, the sun broke through the clouds over Manhattan, bathing the city in crisp, golden winter light.

The New York Times headline screamed across every newsstand in the country:

**THE RETURN OF THE LANCASTER HEIRESS: HOW A STREET SLEEPER TOPPLED A MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR EMPIRE.**

The Lancaster estate in Westchester, now under twenty-four-hour protection by the Kane syndicate, was bustling with restoration crews. The charred ruins were being cleared away, making room for new foundations.

Evangeline stood on the terrace overlooking the expansive gardens, wearing a warm cashmere sweater and jeans. Adrian walked up behind her, holding two mugs of hot cider.

"The board unanimously confirmed your appointment as Chairwoman this morning," Adrian said, handing her a mug. "The accounts are unfrozen. The empire is yours, Evie."

She smiled—a genuine, radiant smile that reached her violet eyes for the first time in ten years. "It doesn't feel real. Sometimes I still wake up thinking I need to find cardboard before the street sweepers arrive."

Adrian placed a warm hand over hers on the railing. "You never have to look for shelter again. I promised you that."

She turned to face him, the unsaid words of ten years of longing, guilt, and blossoming passion lingering between their breaths. Adrian leaned in slowly, his eyes dropping to her lips—

"Boss!"

Marco’s frantic voice shattered the moment. The enforcer sprinted onto the terrace, out of breath, clutching a blood-stained wooden box tied with coarse rope.

"Marco, what the hell?" Adrian barked, stepping protectively in front of Evangeline.

"A courier just left this at the front gate," Marco gasped, holding it out. "It bypassed our biometric sensors because... because of the wax seal, boss. Look at the seal."

Adrian froze.

Imprinted into the crimson wax was a signet mark that hadn't been seen in twenty years: the Kane family sovereign crest, belonging exclusively to Adrian’s father—the Don who had allegedly been assassinated five years before the Lancaster fire.

With a knife, Adrian sliced open the twine and popped the lid of the box.

Inside lay a vintage audio cassette tape and a platinum ring encrusted with black diamonds.

Beside the ring was a handwritten note in handwriting Adrian knew better than his own. The ink was fresh:

*Congratulations on finding your little bride, Adrian. But Julian Vance was merely the dog on my leash. If you want to know who truly gave the order to burn the Lancaster family alive... look at your own blood.*

A cold, suffocating silence descended upon the terrace.

Adrian’s breath stopped. Evangeline’s hand found the hilt of the knife hidden inside her pocket, her eyes widening in horror as she looked at Adrian—the man who had just saved her, whose father might have ordered the extermination of her entire world.
