Chapter 8 - The Winter Solstice Gala

The Metropolitan Museum of Art gleamed against the black velvet of the Manhattan night. Flashbulbs erupted like artillery fire as limousines delivered diplomats, billionaires, and crime lords draped in velvet and diamonds.
Inside the Great Hall, Julian Vance was holding court near the marble fountain, a crystal glass of champagne in hand, laughing with the city’s top politicians.
"To progress," Vance toasted smoothly. "And to the enduring legacy of the Lancaster vision, which we honor tonight."
Suddenly, the heavy glass doors at the entrance opened.
A collective hush swept through the room, cascading like a falling curtain from the grand foyer to the balcony.
Adrian Kane walked through the doors. The fearsome Don of the Kane syndicate was magnificent in a tailored black tuxedo, but he wasn't alone. Walking beside him, her arm linked gracefully through his, was a woman who made every breath catch in every throat.
Evangeline was an absolute vision. The emerald silk gown hugged her slender, aristocratic curves, pooling on the marble floor like liquid jade. Her spun-gold hair framed a face of breathtaking, ethereal beauty. The diamond earrings caught the chandelier light, but it was the small, raised dragon scar along her neck—proudly exposed, unhidden, defiant—that sent a shockwave through the hall.
Julian Vance’s champagne glass slipped from his fingers, shattering onto the marble.
"No..." Vance breathed, his face draining of all color.
Evangeline walked with silent, predatory grace. Ten years of surviving the streets had stripped away any girlish timidity; she moved with the coiled poise of a panther. When her violet eyes locked onto Vance, the temperature in the room seemed to drop below freezing.
Adrian led her straight to the center of the floor, right in front of the raised podium.
"Mr. Vance," Adrian's deep voice echoed across the silent hall. "You look as though you've seen a ghost."
Vance stepped forward, trembling, his teeth clattering behind a forced, ghastly smile. "Kane... what kind of sick joke is this? Who is this woman?"
Evangeline stepped forward, letting go of Adrian's arm. She raised her left hand, displaying the polished Lancaster signet ring gleaming under the spotlights.

"You should recognize your own work, Julian," Evangeline spoke. Her voice was clear, resonant, and dripping with regal venom. "You burned my home. You murdered my parents. But my mother told me that Lancaster steel doesn't melt in common fires."
Gasps erupted like gunshots through the crowd. Cameras flashed furiously.
