Chapter 6 - The Relic in the Dust

Back at the Olympus Tower, Adrian hadn't slept.
He had summoned Dr. Henry Chen, the Kane family's most trusted physician, along with an independent geneticist who had signed five separate non-disclosure agreements under pain of death.
In the lavish guest suite, Evangeline had finally collapsed from sheer physical exhaustion, sleeping soundly in a plush king-sized bed beneath heavy down blankets. It was likely the first warm bed she had known in a decade.
Dr. Chen walked out into the corridor, handing Adrian a sealed medical folder.
"Malnourished, mild anemia, and chronic nerve compression from carrying forty pounds of matted hair on her cervical spine," Chen reported quietly. "She will need months of physical therapy and specialized nutrition. But the DNA test, Adrian... we ran a rapid buccal swab against the Lancaster family database from the 2014 state archives."
Adrian stared at the folder. "And?"
"A ninety-nine-point-nine percent match," Dr. Chen said softly. "It’s her. It’s really Evangeline."
Adrian closed his eyes, leaning his head back against the wall as a profound wave of grief and relief crashed through his chest. For ten years, he had carried the weight of her death like a lead shackle around his soul. He had turned himself into a ruthless demon of the underworld, believing that nothing in this world mattered because the pure, radiant light of his childhood had been extinguished in the dark.
"There's something else," a voice called out.
It was Marco. He walked over holding a velvet tray. On it lay the scorched items recovered from the hair Théo had sheared away: the silver ring, several rusty bobby pins, and a small, oxidized metal cylinder that had been woven deep near the base of her scalp.
"Our weapons specialist opened the cylinder," Marco whispered. "Evie didn't just carry a ring, boss. Her mother hid something inside her hair before she shoved her down the chute."
Adrian picked up the cylinder. Inside was a rolled-up micro-SD card and an original handwritten deed written in faded blue ink.
Adrian unrolled the brittle paper. It was the original Lancaster family trust declaration, signed and stamped by the former governor, explicitly stating that should any Lancaster survive a catastrophic event, all power of attorney, offshore accounts, and corporate voting rights would immediately revert to the sole heir—bypassing Julian Vance entirely.

Even better: the micro-SD card contained surveillance backups from the night of the fire, showing Julian Vance and his Viper mercenaries entering the estate with suppressed firearms.
"The Lancaster mother knew," Adrian muttered, his lips curving into a terrifying, triumphant smirk. "She knew she was going to die, so she made her daughter a living vault. Evangeline’s hair wasn't just a shield... it was the ledger that will destroy Julian Vance."
