Chapter 7 - The Gilded Blade

When Evangeline woke the next morning, the smell of fresh coffee and lavender drifted through the air.
She sat up, gasping as her hands flew to her neck. The lightweight bob fell softly against her jaw. For a brief second, panic flared—*Where is my armor?*—before the warmth of the room grounded her.
Sitting on a chaise lounge across from the bed was Adrian. He was already dressed in a bespoke charcoal suit, drinking black coffee.
"Good morning, Evie," he said.
Evangeline pulled the duvet to her chin. "Stop calling me that. Evangeline died in the fire. I am Wren. Wren eats garbage and sleeps with one eye open."
Adrian stood up and walked toward the bed. He didn't stop until he was standing right beside her. He set down a small velvet box on the nightstand and popped the lid open.
Inside rested the platinum signet ring, cleaned and polished until it shone like a star. Beside it was a dark emerald evening dress made of French silk, along with diamond drop earrings.
"Wren kept you alive in the dark," Adrian said softly, his voice vibrating with absolute conviction. "I respect Wren. I bow to Wren’s strength. But tonight, Little Wren, you have to let Evangeline take the stage."
She looked at the emerald gown, her violet eyes trembling. "Why?"
"Tonight is the Winter Solstice Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art," Adrian explained, his eyes locking onto hers. "Julian Vance is the guest of honor. He is announcing his final merger—liquidating the last of your father's steel mills to build his private mercenary empire. All of high society will be there. The mayor, the judges, the federal prosecutors, the Five Families."
Evangeline’s breath caught. "You want me to walk into his territory?"
"I want you to walk in on my arm," Adrian corrected, leaning down so his face was level with hers. "I want you to stand under the crystal chandeliers, look the man who murdered your parents in the eye, and take back everything he stole from you."
Evangeline stared at the dress. A spark, long buried under ten years of ash and filth, suddenly flared to life behind her violet eyes. The frightened street urchin began to recede, replaced by the indomitable daughter of the Lancaster bloodline.

"He will try to kill me," she said.
"He'll have to go through me first," Adrian replied, his voice a lethal promise. "And I don't die easily."
