Chapter 10 - The Moretti Home (1,800 words)The evening sun was setting over the Gold Coast mansion, casting a warm, golden glow across the manicured gardens and mahogany-paneled dining room.

Inside, the long dining table was set for a family dinner. There were no formal crystal arrangements or cold high-society catering. Instead, large platters of pasta, fresh bread, and roasted vegetables were passed from hand to hand.

Emily and Michael sat together near the center, playing with little Maria, who was giggling as she reached for a piece of bread.

My mother sat beside my father, enjoying a glass of red wine, while Teresa Caruso sat at the head of the table, offering third helpings to everyone within reach.

I sat beside Luca at the head of the table.

Luca raised his glass, looking around the room at the people gathered under his roof.

“A toast,” Luca announced, his voice filled with deep, contented warmth.

Everyone quieted down, raising their glasses.

“To family,” Luca said softly, his dark eyes shining with happiness. “To the ones who are here, the ones we remember, and the ones who walk through the back door when you least expect it to tell you the truth.”

“To family!” everyone cheered in unison, clinking their glasses together.

After dinner, as the guests moved into the living room to listen to music and drink coffee, I walked out onto the rear terrace overlooking the moonlit garden.

The night air was cool and refreshing. I leaned against the stone balustrade, looking up at the stars over Lake Michigan.

Footsteps echoed softly behind me.

Luca stepped out onto the terrace, wearing his comfortable jacket, carrying two small cups of espresso. He handed one to me, leaning against the balustrade by my side.

“Quiet night,” he remarked gently.

“A good night,” I smiled, sipping the rich coffee.

Luca looked at me thoughtfully for a moment, the moonlight catching the silver in his hair. “I was looking at the estate papers today, Claire.”

“Oh? Is there an issue with the title deeds?”

“No,” Luca smiled warmly, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small document. “I’m updating my will and corporate trust.”

I looked at him, surprised. “Luca?”

He unfolded the paper, showing me the text. “I’ve designated you as a permanent co-trustee of the Moretti estate, alongside Emily. If anything ever happens to me, you and Emily will hold equal voting power over the foundation and the family properties.”

I stared at the paper, tears welling in my eyes. “Luca... that’s... that’s too much. I’m just—”

“You aren't just anything, Claire,” Luca interrupted gently, stopping my words with a soft raise of his hand. “You are family. You saved my daughter, you saved my grandchild, and you saved me from my own blind ambition.”

He took my hand, squeezing it warmly with his large palm.

“This house, this family, will always be your home,” Luca said softly.

I looked back through the glass doors at the bright, warm living room, where my parents were laughing with Emily and Michael, where little Maria was sleeping peacefully in her father’s arms, and where the ghost of old pain had been completely replaced by love and truth.

“Thank you, Luca,” I whispered, leaning my shoulder gently against his arm. “Thank you for letting me walk through those doors.”

Luca put his arm around my shoulders, wrapping me in a warm, protective embrace as we stood together under the moonlit sky, looking out over the city that had finally become our home.
