Chapter 6 - The Boardroom Battle (1,800 words)The forty-second floor of the Moretti Holdings tower in downtown Chicago was usually a place of quiet, corporate efficiency. But at two o’clock that afternoon, the atmosphere felt like an impending storm.

In the grand glass boardroom overlooking the city skyline, twelve board members, four senior partners, and five corporate attorneys sat around a long, polished mahogany table.
At the far end sat Arthur Bellini, wearing a tailored navy suit. His face was pale and drawn, but his eyes were filled with the furious desperation of an old wolf who knew he was being pushed into a corner. Beside him sat his head legal counsel, a sharp-faced man named Donald Vance (no relation to Luca’s attorney, Marcus).
Luca sat at the head of the table. He had removed his jacket, rolling his white shirt sleeves up to his forearms. I sat directly to his right, carrying a leather binder containing our documented evidence. Emily sat beside me, calm and composed, her hand resting on her stomach.
“This emergency board meeting is now in order,” Arthur Bellini began, standing up and slamming his hands flat on the table, trying to exert authority. “We are here to address the reckless, emotionally unstable actions of CEO Luca Moretti! In the last twelve hours, he has unilaterally terminated our multi-million-dollar joint development contract, canceled his engagement to my daughter Vanessa, and threatened our partner financial institutions!”
A few board members shifted uncomfortably in their chairs, looking between Arthur and Luca.
“Luca’s personal family drama is threatening the stock value of this entire corporation!” Arthur shouted, pointing a finger down the table. “I am calling for an immediate board vote to strip Luca Moretti of his executive authority and freeze his voting shares pending a psychological evaluation!”
The room went dead silent.
Luca didn't flinch. He didn't raise his voice. He simply leaned back in his leather chair, picked up a pen, and tapped it softly against the table three times.
TAP. TAP. TAP.
“Are you finished, Arthur?” Luca asked softly.
Arthur narrowed his eyes. “I am just getting started!”
Luca turned to me. “Claire, please distribute the folders.”
I stood up calmly, opening my leather binder, and handed a crisp blue folder to each of the twelve board members.
Arthur frowned, watching the distribution. “What is this? What cheap legal parlor trick are you playing, Luca?”
“Page one, gentlemen,” Luca said smoothly, ignoring Arthur entirely. “You will find a certified forensic audit of the Crestview Holdings account. Over the past six months, Arthur Bellini and his daughter Vanessa have illegally siphoned three point two million dollars out of Moretti Holdings' development reserves into an offshore account in the Cayman Islands.”
Gasps erupted around the table. The board members frantically flipped open their folders, scanning the bank wire records and signature logs.
Arthur’s face went from pale to a deep, dangerous crimson. “That’s a lie! That’s a fabricated document!”
“Page three,” Luca continued, his voice like cold iron. “You will find a copy of the criminal indictment issued thirty minutes ago by the State’s Attorney. It charges Arthur Bellini and Vanessa Bellini with corporate fraud, grand larceny, and attempted illegal seizure of private residential property using falsified municipal documents.”
Donald Vance, Arthur’s attorney, quickly grabbed the blue folder from the board member beside him. As his eyes scanned the official court seal stamped on the indictment, his face drained of all color. He leaned over and whispered frantically into Arthur’s ear.
Arthur shoved his attorney away, standing up so fast his heavy leather chair crashed backward onto the floor. “This is a setup! You can’t do this to me, Luca! My family built half the commercial infrastructure in this city!”
“Your family built a house of cards on fraud and extortion,” Luca said, standing up slowly. He towered over the table, his presence suffocating every voice in the room. “You thought you could send your daughter into my home to isolate me from my family. You thought you could make my daughter feel worthless, steal her mother’s home, and rob my grandchild of her legacy.”
Luca took two steps down the length of the table, stopping directly in front of Arthur.
“You failed,” Luca whispered softly.
Just then, the heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open.
Four uniformed officers from the Chicago Police Department, accompanied by two federal agents in dark suits, walked into the room.
The lead federal agent stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. “Arthur Bellini?”
Arthur froze, looking around the room at the twelve board members who were all staring at him with utter disgust and condemnation. Not a single person stood up to defend him.
“Arthur Bellini, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, conspiracy, and grand larceny,” the agent announced, stepping behind Arthur and pulling his arms back, clicking the steel cuffs tightly around his wrists.
“Luca!” Arthur screamed as he was turned toward the door, his aristocratic composure completely shattering into pathetic pleas. “Luca, think about our history! Think about our business! You can’t let them do this to me! Talk to the prosecutor!”
Luca stood motionless, watching as the officers led the disgraced developer out of the boardroom.
“Goodbye, Arthur,” Luca said quietly.
As the doors shut behind the police, the room fell into a heavy, profound silence.

Luca turned back to the remaining board members. He didn't look triumphant or boastful. He simply looked like a man who had done what was necessary to protect what belonged to him.
“Gentlemen,” Luca said, adjusting his cuffs. “Let’s get back to work.”
