Chapter 3 - The House on Maple Street (1,800 words)The atmosphere in the room shifted instantly. The warm, emotional haze that had filled the dining room evaporated, replaced by a sudden, razor-sharp tension.

Luca’s head snapped toward Emily. “What did you just say?”
Emily looked between her father and Vanessa, her confusion deepening. “The house on Maple Street. Mom’s house.”
It was the little two-story red brick house in Oak Park where Emily had grown up. It was the house where Luca’s late wife, Maria, had planted hydrangeas along the front walkway, and where her memory still lingered in every room.
Vanessa quietly reached for her champagne flute on the table, her hands trembling so noticeably that the crystal glass clinked against her plate.
Luca caught the movement instantly. His eyes narrowed into dark slits as he turned to his daughter. “Why would you think I sold your mother’s house, Emily?”
“Vanessa called me last week,” Emily said, her voice dropping.
Luca became entirely still. He didn't blink. He didn't move a muscle. “What did she tell you?”
“She said that after the wedding, you wanted to simplify your real estate portfolio,” Emily explained, reaching into her purse. “She said you were liquidating small residential properties, and that I had until this Friday at noon to clear out all of Mom’s personal belongings before the demolition crew arrived.”
Luca stared at Vanessa. “Demolition?”
Vanessa took a quick sip of her champagne, her voice high and strained. “Luca, it’s a minor property in an older suburb. The maintenance costs on that place have been ridiculous, and we discussed streamlining your personal assets—”
“That house isn't mine to sell,” Luca interrupted, his voice dropping into a register so low and dangerous that several guests at the nearby table visibly recoiled.
Emily frowned. “What do you mean it isn't yours?”
Luca reached into his inner suit jacket, pulling out a sleek leather wallet. He extracted a small, laminated card and handed it to Emily. It was a copy of a property deed registration.
“I transferred the title of the Maple Street house three years ago,” Luca said softly, keeping his eyes fixed on Vanessa.
Emily read the text on the card, her eyes widening in shock. “To... to who?”
“To you,” Luca said to his daughter. “I put the deed in a trust for your twenty-fourth birthday. You have been the sole legal owner of your mother’s house for thirty-six months.”
Vanessa’s champagne glass hit the mahogany table too hard, sloshing bright yellow wine across the white tablecloth.
Luca turned toward her, stepping forward slowly, like a lion stalking a prey that had nowhere left to run. “Why did you tell my daughter she had to empty a house that she owns?”
“Luca... please,” Vanessa stammered, her regal composure completely shattered. “I was just... I was trying to handle the estate management for us! I thought the property was under the corporate umbrella of Moretti Development!”
“You know every single asset under Moretti Development,” Luca growled. “You’ve spent the last six months going through my corporate books line by line.”
Emily reached deeper into her leather purse and pulled out a folded white envelope stamped with a certified mail sticker. “Dad... there’s more.”
Luca took the paper from her. His eyes moved rapidly across the printed lines of the letterhead.
It was a formal Notice of Intent to Inspect, issued by a private real estate acquisition firm called Crestview Holdings. The letter demanded full access to the Maple Street property for a “final structural evaluation” scheduled for eight o’clock the following morning.
And printed at the bottom of the page, listed as the primary corporate contact and authorized representative, was a handwritten name and phone number:
VANESSA BELLINI.
Luca read the line twice. A vein began to throb near his temple.
“Explain this,” Luca commanded, holding the paper inches from Vanessa’s face. “Why is your name on a private acquisition document for my daughter’s property?”
Vanessa’s face went completely ghost-white. “It... it isn't what it looks like, Luca! Crestview is an investment group my family works with! They made an unsolicited offer on the lot, and I was simply evaluating whether—”
“You don't evaluate my daughter’s home!” Luca roared, his voice finally exploding across the dining room like thunder. Several guests jumped in their seats.
Emily grabbed her father’s arm, her voice rising in sudden panic. “Dad! Yesterday, two men in suit jackets showed up at the house while I was packing Mom’s old photo albums. They had a master key to the front door. They didn't care about the furniture or the yard. They kept asking me where the key to the basement cabinet was!”
Luca turned to Emily, his eyes wide. “Mom’s locked cabinet?”
“Yes!” Emily said, pointing an accusing finger directly at Vanessa. “They told me they were under strict orders from Mrs. Bellini to retrieve the contents of the steel fireproof cabinet in the cellar before any movers arrived!”
Luca slowly folded the letter in his hand, his knuckles turning pure white. The fury in his eyes was no longer just anger—it was cold, lethal calculation.
He turned toward the back of the dining room, where two large, broad-shouldered men in dark suits—his personal security team—stood near the doors.
“Frank. Thomas,” Luca called out.
The two security men stepped forward instantly. “Yes, Mr. Moretti?”
“Take two cars and go to the Maple Street house immediately,” Luca ordered, his tone chillingly precise. “Change the locks. Set up a twenty-four-hour detail around the perimeter. Nobody goes near that property. If anyone tries to enter—I don't care who they claim sent them—you arrest them for trespassing.”
“Understood, boss,” Frank said, turning and heading out the doors immediately.
Luca turned back to Vanessa. The room was deathly quiet. Thirty of the city’s most powerful people sat in absolute silence, watching the sudden collapse of an engagement that had been featured in society magazines just days prior.

Luca took off his gold engagement band, holding it between two fingers. He looked at it for a brief second, then tossed it casually onto the wine-stained tablecloth in front of Vanessa.
“The engagement is over,” Luca said flatly. “And you are going to sit in my office upstairs right now and tell me exactly what is inside my late wife’s cabinet that you were so desperate to steal.”
