Chapter 8 - A New Chapter (1,800 words)Two months later.

The summer sun was shining brightly over Chicago when the call came in at three o’clock in the morning.

I was asleep in my apartment when my phone chimed on the nightstand. I sat up quickly, answering on the second ring.

“Claire,” Luca’s voice came through the speaker, breathless and ecstatic. “It’s time. We’re at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.”

I threw on a comfortable sweater and jeans, grabbed my keys, and drove straight to the hospital.

The private maternity wing on the tenth floor was quiet, illuminated by soft hallway lights. When I stepped out of the elevator, I saw Luca standing near the window, wearing a surgical gown over his shirt, holding a tiny, pink-blanketed bundle in his arms.

He was crying—quiet, joyful tears streaming down his face as he looked down at the newborn baby.

I walked over softly, trying not to disturb the moment. “Mr. Moretti?”

Luca looked up, his face radiant with a pure, unadulterated happiness I had never seen before. He turned slightly, showing me the tiny, sleeping face of a beautiful baby girl with a soft tuft of dark hair.

“Meet Maria,” Luca whispered, his voice trembling with emotion. “Maria Emily Moretti-Miller.”

My heart swelled. “She’s absolute perfection, Luca.”

“Seven pounds, two ounces,” Luca beamed, looking down at his granddaughter as she let out a tiny, soft sigh. “Emily is resting comfortably inside. Michael is with her.”

He carefully sat down on a bench near the window, cradling the baby against his chest as if she were the most precious jewel in the world.

“You know, Claire,” Luca whispered softly, gently stroking the baby’s tiny cheek with his finger. “Six months ago, I was sitting in a dining room full of strangers, preparing to marry a woman who hated my family, completely blind to the fact that my life was falling apart.”

He looked up at me, his eyes full of deep emotion.

“And then a brave young woman walked through those doors, holding my pregnant daughter’s hand, and gave me back my life.”

I smiled, my own eyes tearing up. “I was just doing my job, Luca.”

“No,” Luca shook his head gently. “You weren't doing a job. You were being a protector. And in this family, we never forget the people who protect us.”

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box, holding it out to me.

I blinked in surprise. “What is this?”

“Open it,” he smiled.

I took the velvet box and opened the latch. Inside was a beautiful gold key attached to an engraved medal. Across the front, carved in elegant script, were the words: ESTATE MANAGER & LIFETIME TRUSTEE — MORETTI FAMILY TRUST.

“This key opens every property our family owns,” Luca said softly. “Including the new community foundation we are establishing in Maria’s name next month. I want you to run it, Claire. I want you to manage the charitable housing grants for families across Chicago who need a fair chance.”

I stared at the gold key, overwhelmed by the magnitude of the trust he was placing in my hands.

“I don't know what to say, Luca...” I choked out.

“Say you’ll stay,” Luca smiled warmly, taking my hand. “Say you’ll help us build a future where no child ever feels unwanted, and no family is ever left behind.”

I looked at the sleeping baby in his arms, then at the man who had turned his cold empire into a warm home.

“I’ll stay,” I whispered. “I’ll stay for as long as you need me.”
