Chapter 3 - The GiftAt 9:30 PM, the grand ballroom chimes rang, signaling the start of the birthday presentation.

The room quieted as Daniel stood on the low velvet dais beside the grand piano. He wore a tailored charcoal tuxedo, looking handsome, grounded, and noticeably embarrassed by all the attention. Vanessa stood glued to his side, her arm linked tightly through his, radiating polished perfection.
“Thank you, everyone, for coming tonight,” Daniel said into the microphone, his warm voice echoing through the space. “I see friends here from college, colleagues from software logistics, and my wonderful staff who made tonight possible.”
He caught Naomi’s eye near the catering station and offered her a subtle, warm nod of appreciation. Naomi gave a small, respectful smile back.
“Before we cut the cake,” Vanessa interrupted sweetly, taking the microphone from Daniel’s hand, “I have a very special presentation. Daniel thinks he knows everything about this house and his life, but tonight, I wanted to show him how deeply he is cherished.”
Two catering assistants wheeled out a velvet-covered display table.
“This,” Vanessa announced proudly to the clapping crowd, “is a custom-restored, 19th-century navy chronometer pocket watch—the exact model Daniel’s late grandfather carried when he founded the family’s first shipping line. It took me six months to locate it in London and have it restored.”
The crowd gasped in appreciation. It was a spectacular, wildly expensive gift, symbolizing deep family history and prestige.
Daniel looked down at the velvet box. “Vanessa... this is incredible. Thank you.” He kissed her cheek, though Naomi noticed his smile didn't quite reach his eyes. Daniel was a man who preferred quiet gestures over grand public spectacles.
As the applause died down, Daniel looked around the room. “Is Chef Marcus still in the kitchen?”
Head Chef Marcus stepped forward from the service door. “Yes, Mr. Whitfield?”
“Did the wooden box arrive earlier today?” Daniel asked.
Marcus paused, looking confused. “No, sir. No wooden boxes were delivered to the kitchen today.”
Naomi froze. Suddenly she remembered.
At 2:00 PM, while she was wiping down the side entrance porch, a local courier had dropped off a small, plain wooden box wrapped in twine, addressed personally to Daniel with no return address. Knowing how chaotic the kitchen would be, Naomi had placed it on the side table inside Daniel’s personal library on the main floor.
“I have it, Mr. Whitfield,” Naomi spoke up clearly, stepping out from the shadow of the catering line.
The entire ballroom turned to look at her. Vanessa’s smile instantly stiffened into marble.
“It arrived at the side entrance this afternoon,” Naomi explained politely. “I placed it in your library for safekeeping.”
“Would you mind bringing it out, Naomi?” Daniel asked kindly. “If it’s from who I think it is, it’s the only gift I’ve been waiting for all day.”
“Of course, sir.”
Vanessa took a sharp step forward, her voice cutting through the quiet. “Daniel, darling, we don't need to disrupt the program for a random package delivered to the maid’s entrance. Let’s cut the cake first.”
“It’ll take two minutes, Vanessa,” Daniel replied smoothly, motioning for Naomi to go.
Naomi hurried down the quiet east wing corridor to the library. The room smelled of old paper and leather. She picked up the modest, hand-carved cedar box from the mahogany side table and carried it carefully back to the ballroom.
When she placed the box on the presentation table, the contrasts were stark: Vanessa’s $50,000 diamond-encrusted watch sitting beside a simple, unpolished wooden box tied with rough twine.
Daniel smiled warmly at Naomi. “Thank you.”
He untied the string and lifted the wooden lid.
Inside sat a small, battered silver compass, pitted with age and sea salt, lying atop a weathered leather notebook.

The moment Daniel saw the compass, his breath caught in his throat. His hand trembled slightly as he lifted it out of the box.
“Where did this come from?” Daniel asked, his voice suddenly thick with raw emotion.
