Chapter 6 - The Paper Trail“I went to the bakery address written on the sticky note left on the kitchen island,” Naomi explained, pulling the folded sticky note from her pocket and handing it to Daniel. “When I arrived, the cake was already boxed and waiting on the counter. But when I set it up here, the gold script originally read Happy Birthday, David.”

Vanessa let out a strangled, desperate laugh. “She’s lying! She rewrote it herself to set me up!”

“I did rewrite it, Miss Cole,” Naomi admitted calmly. “Because I thought it was an honest mistake and I wanted to save the party. But when I called the bakery listed on your official event itinerary to report the error, the manager told me they never took an order for Mr. Whitfield. They don't even use gold leaf.”

Naomi reached deep into her apron pocket and pulled out the second item she had been holding all night.

She handed Daniel the ivory envelope with the gold wax seal.

“This card was attached to the original cake,” Naomi said softly.

Daniel unsealed the envelope and pulled out the handwritten note:

“To my dearest David—another year of shared dreams and unspoken promises. Forever yours, V.”

Daniel stared at the handwriting. He knew Vanessa’s cursive better than anyone. He had received hundreds of love notes from her over the last two years.

He turned to Vanessa, his eyes dead and cold. “You didn't just try to steal $12 million from my company, Vanessa. David isn't just your cousin, is he?”

Vanessa backed away until her spine hit the grand piano. Her glamorous demeanor was entirely gone, replaced by the cornered terror of a caught predator.

“Daniel, please...” she sobbed, tears finally breaking through her heavy makeup. “He—he threatened me! David had debts with dangerous people! He forced me to give him access to your office!”

“Is that why you ordered a cake celebrating his birthday instead of mine?” Daniel asked bitterly. “Because tonight was supposed to be the night you two ran away with my money?”

Before Vanessa could answer, the heavy double doors of the ballroom swung open.

Two uniformed police officers, accompanied by Grand Oakmont Estate’s private security chief, walked firmly into the room.

“Daniel Whitfield?” the lead officer asked.

“I’m Daniel Whitfield,” he replied, handing the plastic bag of bank documents to the officer. “And the woman standing by the piano just authorized an illegal $12 million wire transfer from my company.”

The officers moved in swiftly, clicking handcuffs around Vanessa’s slender wrists.

The socialites and business magnates in the ballroom stood in stunned silence as Vanessa Cole, wearing her $50,000 diamond watch and ice-blue silk gown, was escorted out of the grand estate in tears, her heels clicking a desperate, final retreat.
