Chapter 7 - The Unseen PlayerThe ballroom emptied rapidly after the police departed.

By 11:00 PM, the grand Oakmont Estate was silent. The string lights still glowed over the dark lawn, but the music had stopped. The catering staff was busy clearing empty champagne flutes and sweeping up the fallen remnants of the chocolate cake.
Daniel sat alone at the long mahogany dining table, holding the battered silver compass his grandfather had carried decades ago.
Naomi walked quietly into the room carrying a fresh cup of dark roast coffee—no sugar, just a dash of cream, exactly how Daniel took it. She set it gently on the table beside him.
“Thank you, Naomi,” Daniel said quietly, without looking up.
“I’m sorry your birthday ended like this, Mr. Whitfield,” Naomi offered softly.
Daniel let out a dry, tired chuckle. “It could have ended with me bankrupt and alone in an empty house tomorrow morning. You saved me, Naomi. If you hadn't paid attention to that cake... if you hadn't kept that card...”
He looked up at her, his dark eyes filled with genuine gratitude. “Why did you keep it? Most people would have thrown it away to avoid getting involved.”
Naomi smoothed her hands over her apron. “Because you treated my daughter like a person, Mr. Whitfield. When everyone else saw a housekeeper with a gap in her resume, you saw someone worthy of trust. I protect people who protect my daughter.”
Daniel stared at her for a long moment, a deep respect shining in his eyes.
Suddenly, his private phone rang on the table.
He answered it on speakerphone. It was Chief Legal Officer Marcus.
“Daniel,” Marcus said, his voice urgent. “The police just processed Vanessa at the precinct. She’s talking.”
“What is she saying?” Daniel asked.
“She admitted to the wire transfer scheme,” Marcus explained. “David Cole was her secret husband—they were married in Nevada five years ago before she ever met you. They targeted you for your software logistics wealth.”
Daniel winced slightly, but he wasn't surprised. “And the compass? Did she track it down?”
“No,” Marcus revealed, his voice dropping into a serious tone. “That’s the strange part. Vanessa told the detectives she had no idea where that wooden box came from. She claimed credit for it at the party on the spot because she thought it would make her look good in front of your wealthy investors.”
Daniel froze, looking down at the silver compass in his hand. “If Vanessa didn't find it... then who sent it to the house today?”

“Check the wooden box again, Daniel,” Marcus advised. “The detectives said there was a second compartment in the bottom.”
Daniel picked up the small cedar box and turned it over.
