Chapter 4 - The Unspoken TruthThe ballroom went deathly silent.

Daniel stared down at the weathered compass as if holding a piece of his own soul. He turned it over in his hand, feeling the faded initials carved into the silver back: D.W. - 1954.
“This was my grandfather’s actual compass,” Daniel said softly, his voice amplified by the quiet room. “The one he carried on his very first cargo barge. It was lost during the marina fire thirty years ago. I thought it was gone forever.”
He looked up, his eyes scanning the crowd, settled on Vanessa. “Did you find this, Vanessa? Is this part of your gift?”
Vanessa hesitated for a fraction of a second. She glanced at the wealthy guests staring at her, then looked at Daniel’s deeply moved face. A calculated smile bloomed across her lips.
“I wanted it to be a surprise, darling,” Vanessa lied effortlessly, smoothing her silk dress. “It took an immense amount of effort and private investigators to track it down for you. Happy birthday.”
The crowd burst into warm applause, charmed by Vanessa’s incredible "thoughtfulness."
Standing near the edge of the stage, Naomi felt her stomach turn.
She knew Vanessa was lying. Because when Naomi had placed that wooden box in the library four hours earlier, she had noticed the small hand-written card tucked underneath the twine.
The handwriting on that card wasn't from a private investigator or an elite London antique dealer. It was the soft, familiar cursive of Daniel’s estranged older sister, Clara Whitfield—the sister who had been disowned by the family ten years ago after a bitter dispute engineered by Vanessa’s social network.
Naomi kept her mouth closed, her heart aching for Daniel. He was surrounded by two hundred people celebrating his life, yet his entire world was built on carefully constructed lies.
“Now!” Vanessa announced brightly, taking center stage again. “It’s time for the cake!”
Two waiters wheeled out the three-tier dark chocolate cake. The gold leaf shimmered under the ballroom chandeliers.
Vanessa stepped up beside the cake, holding a silver cutting knife. She looked smug, confident, and entirely in control.
Until Daniel stepped closer to look at the gold inscription on top.
He frowned slightly, leaning in. His sharp eyes noticed the subtle texture difference where Naomi had scraped away the original name and quickly piped "Daniel" in fresh gold icing.
“The script looks a bit wet,” Daniel noted casually, reaching out a finger to touch the edge.
Vanessa’s eyes flared with panic. “It’s just fresh icing, Daniel! Don't ruin it before the photo!”
She moved quickly to make the first cut, but her heavy silk sleeve caught the edge of the silver cake pedestal.
With a sickening crash, the top two tiers of the magnificent cake slid off the stand, collapsing sideways onto the crisp white tablecloth and splattering dark chocolate frosting across the floor.
Gasps rang out across the room.
Vanessa gasped in horrified embarrassment, dropping the silver knife. “Oh my god!”
Naomi immediately stepped forward with a cloth from her apron to help contain the spill before it ruined the hardwood flooring.
As Naomi bent down to gather the fallen chocolate cake structure, her eyes caught something buried deep within the soft, middle layer of the shattered cake.
It wasn't chocolate.
Embedded inside the core of the second tier was a clear, sealed plastic bag containing a thick stack of folded financial documents and a set of master keycards stamped with the logo of Whitfield Global Logistics.

Naomi froze, her hand hovering over the ruined cake.
Daniel knelt down beside her to help. His eyes landed directly on the clear plastic bag poking out from the cake's interior.
