Chapter 4 - The Paper TrailExposing Ethan and taking his company was satisfying, but I knew my work was far from finished. A man like Ethan didn't act with that level of reckless arrogance unless he thought he was entirely untouchable. I knew there had to be deeper secrets hidden within Vance Innovations, and as the new head of the company, I had full access to every server, email archive, and financial ledger.

I spent the next forty-eight hours holed up in the executive office, working alongside a team of independent forensic accountants. What we discovered in the digital vaults went far beyond a simple workplace affair.

"Victoria, you need to look at this," my chief accountant said, sliding his laptop across my desk.

I leaned in, examining a series of wire transfers routed through offshore shell companies in the Cayman Islands over the past six months. Millions of dollars had been systematically siphoned out of the research and development budget.

"Where was this money going?" I asked, my eyes narrowing.

"To an entity called Apex Holdings," the accountant replied. "And guess who the registered beneficial owner of Apex Holdings is?"

He clicked a file, bringing up a corporate formation document. The signature at the bottom belonged to Jessica Miller. But the co-signatory, holding fifty percent of the voting shares, was Evelyn Vance—Ethan's mother.

I leaned back in my leather chair, letting out a slow, amazed breath. "Evelyn wasn't just covering up Ethan's affair... she was actively conspiring with Jessica to embezzle funds from my family's investment."

"It gets worse," the accountant continued. "They weren't just stealing cash. They were transferring Vance Innovations' proprietary patent portfolio—specifically the military-grade optical sensors we developed last year—to a foreign competitor."

A wave of icy clarity washed over me. The entire wedding, the romance, the courtship—it wasn't just Ethan being a foolish, unfaithful idiot. The Vance family had been running a long-term corporate espionage campaign designed to bleed my family's venture fund dry, steal our technology, and leave us holding the bankrupt shell while they walked away with tens of millions.

Ethan's affair with Jessica wasn't an accident. It was the reward for her help in facilitating the theft.

I pulled out my phone and dialed the direct line for the Special Investigations Unit of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

"Agent Miller?" I said calmly when the line connected. "My name is Victoria Montgomery. I am the CEO of Vance Innovations. I have evidence of corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, and international intellectual property theft involving high-ranking corporate officers. I'd like to schedule an immediate meeting."

They thought they had played me for a fool, using my heart to steal my fortune. But they had forgotten one fundamental truth: I was a Montgomery, and we never lose a war.
