Chapter 1 - The Bloodline AwakensThe line was dead, but Luca’s voice echoed in the dark bedroom like a war horn.

I sat on the edge of the velvet mattress, my hands trembling as I wrapped my wrists in clean medical tape. Every breath tasted like rust and copper. The Vale estate was quiet now. Downstairs, the caterers were cleaning the champagne glasses. In the master wing, my husband Adrian was likely pouring a nightcap with Vanessa, celebrating my absolute subjugation.

They thought I was a orphan with a quiet past. When Adrian married me five years ago, my brothers had wiped my public records to protect me from their former lives. To the Vales, I was Anna—a soft-spoken art conservator with no background, no family, and no backing. They mistook my silence for submission. They mistook my patience for weakness.

I stood up, walked to the full-length mirror, and unbuttoned the torn silk of my evening dress.

Across my back were thirty dark purple welts, crisscrossing the skin where Adrian’s heavy leather belt had struck me while his mother clapped and his brother recorded. My smartwatch sat on the vanity table, its screen dark, storing thirty-eight minutes of high-definition audio and video footage recorded directly to an encrypted cloud server.

They wanted a show. I was going to give them a tragedy.

I dressed in simple black leggings, a heavy wool sweater, and dark boots. I didn't grab my jewelry. I didn't grab my designer bags. I took only my phone, my smartwatch, and my true birth certificate, which had been hidden beneath the lining of my leather trunk.

At 3:30 AM, a quiet hum vibrated outside the iron gates of the Vale estate.

I unlocked the side terrace door, slipped past the sleeping security guard in the glass booth, and walked down the long, tree-lined driveway. The iron gates were locked, but I didn't need them opened.

A massive black Ford F-150 pulled up on the other side of the stone wall. The driver's side door opened, and a towering figure stepped into the foggy night.

It was Nico, my second-oldest brother. Six-foot-four, built like a brick wall, with a scar cutting through his left eyebrow from our youth in South Brooklyn.

He didn't say a word. He threw a heavy rope ladder over the ten-foot stone wall. I climbed over without hesitation, my raw wrists burning with agony, but I didn't make a sound.

When my boots hit the pavement on the other side, Nico caught me before I could fall.

He looked down at my face, then at my bandaged wrists visible beneath my sweater sleeves. His jaw clenched so hard I heard his teeth click.

"Who touched you, Anna?" Nico’s voice was a low, guttural growl that sounded like grinding stones.

"Adrian," I said, my voice steady, cold, and entirely devoid of tears. "And his family watched."

Nico opened the rear door of the truck. Inside sat my other three brothers: Dominic, the forensic accountant who ran our financial intelligence network; Matteo, the high-stakes defense attorney who owned half the judges in the tri-state area; and Leo, the youngest, a cybersecurity genius who had spent the last eight years building defense infrastructure for the federal government.

And in the front passenger seat sat Luca.

Luca Moretti didn't look like a mobster anymore. He wore a tailored charcoal suit and a thousand-dollar watch. But when he turned his dark eyes toward me, the air inside the truck dropped ten degrees.

"Let me see," Luca said quietly.

I stepped into the cab and pulled up the back of my sweater.

The silence that followed was terrifying. Dominic lowered his tablet. Matteo closed his eyes and took a deep breath. Leo stared at my back, his eyes widening in pure horror.

Nico slammed the truck door shut and got into the driver’s seat.

Luca reached out, his heavy hand gently touching my shoulder, avoiding the bruised skin.

"They think we are dead, Anna," Luca said softly, his voice trembling with a terrifying, contained fury. "They think because we put on suits and pay taxes, the Moretti name is just a memory."

He pulled out a satellite phone and dialed a ten-digit encrypted number.

"Matteo," Luca said, looking at our lawyer brother. "Issue the asset freeze on Vale Enterprises. Dominic, pull every offshore account tied to Adrian, his father, and his mistress. Leo... shut down their security network by dawn."

Luca looked back at me, his eyes dark as midnight.

"Adrian Vale wanted thirty strikes for a ruined dress," Luca whispered. "By Friday, he won't even have a coat to wear."
