Chapter 5 - The Legal StrangleholdBy Thursday afternoon, the collapse of the Vale dynasty was the top story across every major news network in North America.

The media was in a frenzy. Headlines read: VALE LOGISTICS EMPIRE COLLAPSES AMID FRAUD; EX-WIFE UNVEILS SYSTEMATIC ABUSE AND CORRUPTION.
While Richard and Marcus sat in a federal holding facility in Lower Manhattan unable to post their ten-million-dollar bail, Adrian was trapped inside his mansion with no staff, no electricity, and no money.
I sat in the high-floor conference room of my brothers' law firm in Midtown, watching the legal filings stack up on the mahogany table.
Matteo sat across from me, sipping an espresso. "The civil forfeiture paperwork has been approved by the judge, Anna. Because the Vale estate was purchased using funds drawn from your father's trust estate through fraudulent loans, the court has placed the entire property into a legal receivership."
"When do we take possession?" I asked.
"Tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM," Matteo smiled. "And there's more. Vanessa Crowe’s father just filed for personal bankruptcy, and Vanessa was formally indicted two hours ago for grand larceny and obstruction of justice."
The double doors of the conference room swung open, and Luca walked in, throwing a thick Manila envelope onto the table.
"What's that?" I asked.
"That," Luca said, taking a seat at the head of the table, "is the complete financial file on Adrian’s private assets. He tried to hide a two-million-dollar offshore account in the Cayman Islands under his mother's maiden name. Dominic cracked the server thirty minutes ago."
"Did he liquidate it?"
"He tried to," Luca grinned darkly. "He was going to use it to pay off a team of high-priced criminal defense attorneys. But since the account was created using forged signatures from your marriage trust, we had the federal court seize the entire balance. Adrian is officially broke."
My phone chimed with a video message notification from an unknown number.
I opened it. It was a video sent by Adrian.
He sat in the dark living room of his mansion, lit only by the screen of his phone. He looked haggard, his shirt torn, his eyes bloodshot and swollen from crying.
"Anna..." Adrian’s voice wailed from the speaker, trembling with pathetic desperation. "Please... I'm begging you. My mother is sick. We have no food in the house. The power company shut off the electricity hours ago. Vanessa blocked my number and ran away to Florida. I have nobody left, Anna! Please... come home. We can fix this! I love you!"
I watched the video twice, feeling no anger, no pain, and zero regret.
I handed the phone to Luca.
Luca looked at the video, let out a single, dark laugh, and erased the file permanently from the device.

"He thinks he can ask for mercy," Luca murmured, turning his gaze toward me. "He doesn't realize that a Moretti never forgets... and never forgives."
"Tomorrow at 9:00 AM," I said, standing up and smoothing my black blazer. "I want the locksmiths ready. I want the movers ready. And I want the media standing outside the gates."
