Chapter 4 - A Mother's Silent VowGrace stood in the courtyard, her face burning from the sting of Vivien’s hand, her chest heaving as she swallowed the overwhelming urge to scream. She looked into the eyes of the woman who was about to marry Nathaniel Callaway—a woman dripping in diamonds, yet utterly devoid of humanity.

Grace knew that if she struck back, Vivien would call the police, claim assault, and have Grace thrown in jail, leaving Lily completely alone. Grace had no power here. No money. No influence.

"Come on, baby," Grace whispered choked, turning her back on Vivien. She carried the sobbing Lily away from the courtyard, heading through the rear entrance toward the small staff quarters on the basement level of the mansion.

Vivien stood back, dusting off her hands with a satisfied smirk. "Clean up this mess, Chloe," she ordered her assistant coldly. "And make sure the photographers are directed straight to the champagne fountain when they arrive."

Down in the small, cozy room that served as their bedroom, Grace sat on the edge of the bed, rocking Lily back and forth. It took nearly twenty minutes for the child’s desperate sobs to turn into quiet, hiccuping breaths.

"Mommy..." Lily whimpered, rubbing her swollen red eyes. "Did I do something bad? Is that why the pretty lady burned my toys?"

The question broke Grace’s heart into a million pieces. She held Lily’s face between her palms, kissing her forehead over and over again. "No, my sweet angel. You did nothing wrong. You are the sweetest, best girl in the whole world. The lady was wrong. Very, very wrong."

"My bear is gone..." Lily whispered softly, clutching her little chest.

"I know, baby. I know," Grace murmured, wiping away her own tears. "But Mommy promises you... I will protect you. No one will ever hurt you like this again."

At that moment, the door to the staff quarters creaked open, and Cook Martha rushed in, her face pale with worry. She took one look at Grace’s reddened cheek and Lily’s tear-stained face, and her hands began to shake with indignation.

"I heard what happened from the footman," Martha whispered furiously, sitting down beside Grace and wrapping her arm around her. "That terrible, evil woman! To burn a child's gifts? To lay a hand on you? She is a demon in a silk dress!"

"She threatened to ruin me, Martha," Grace said, her voice trembling. "She said if I said anything, she'd make sure I never work again. Nathaniel trusts her. He's going to marry her tonight."

"Nathaniel doesn't know who she really is," Martha said firmly. "He's been blinded by her charm and his own busy schedule. Grace, you have to tell him."

Grace shook her head in despair. "Why would he believe me? I'm just the housekeeper. She’s his fiancee. She’s rich, connected, and influential. If I cause a scene at his engagement party, he'll just think I'm jealous or crazy."

"Nathaniel loves this child, Grace," Martha argued gently, pointing to Lily, who was slowly drifting off to sleep from exhaustion. "You've seen it. He cares about her. If he knew what Vivien did, he wouldn't stand for it."

Grace looked down at Lily’s peaceful, exhausted face. A slow, quiet resolve settled deep within her soul. Martha was right about one thing: she couldn't let Nathaniel walk blindly into a marriage with a monster, nor could she let Vivien get away with destroying her daughter's heart.

"I won't cause a scene," Grace whispered, her eyes flashing with a cold, determined light. "Not yet. But tonight, when the whole world is watching... the truth will come out."
