Chapter 7 - The Unraveling MaskNathaniel stopped dead in his tracks. The atmosphere in the room shifted instantly from joyful celebration to tense, suffocating drama. The journalists held their breath, and the cameramen quietly raised their lenses, capturing every frame.

"What do you mean?" Nathaniel demanded, his eyes shifting between Grace’s bruised cheek and Vivien’s panicked face. "Who did this to you?"
"Your fiancée did," Grace said, her voice remarkably calm and steady.
A collective gasp echoed across the grand ballroom. Vivien’s face flushed bright red with rage and terror.
"She’s lying!" Vivien shrieked, her voice cracking in desperation. "She’s a crazy, bitter maid! Nathaniel, don't listen to a word she says! She’s trying to ruin our engagement! Security, get this woman out of here right now!"
Two large security guards stepped forward from the perimeter, but Nathaniel raised a single, absolute hand.
"Halt," Nathaniel commanded. His voice was like thunder. The security guards froze instantly.
Nathaniel turned his dark, intense gaze back to Grace. "Grace, explain. Exactly what happened today?"
Grace set Lily down gently on her feet. Lily immediately reached up and grabbed Nathaniel’s pant leg, hiding her face behind his knee. Nathaniel’s heart clenched at the child's obvious fear.
"This afternoon, Miss Marsh came to the secondary dining room where Lily’s birthday gifts were set up," Grace explained, her voice ringing clear and true. "She called our daughter’s presence a disgrace to her aesthetic. She told her assistant to take all of Lily’s birthday presents—the handmade teddy bear I spent weeks making, the knitted clothes from Cook Martha, the storybooks, and your gift—and throw them into the outdoor barbecue pit."
The crowd began to whisper furiously.
"No! It's a lie! A total fabrication!" Vivien screamed, trembling with fury. "I would never do such a thing! I love children! You all heard my interview!"
"When Lily ran toward the fire to save her toys," Grace continued, her voice trembling slightly with remembered terror, "I had to tackle her to keep her from getting burned. When I confronted Miss Marsh for burning a three-year-old’s gifts... she slapped me across the face and threatened to throw us onto the street."
"This is absurd!" Vivien yelled, turning to the wealthy guests. "Are you really going to believe the word of a common servant over mine?! She has no proof! She probably slapped herself just to set me up!"
Grace didn't flinch. She slowly opened the black velvet box she was carrying in her hand.
Inside lay the charred, blackened, melted metal husk of the silver elephant music box—its delicate winding key twisted and snapped by intense heat.
Nathaniel looked down at the ruined object. His eyes widened in shock. He recognized it instantly. It was the exact custom-made silver music box he had ordered from an artisan in London three weeks ago, specifically engraved with Lily's initials.
"You said you bought her wonderful toys, Vivien," Nathaniel whispered, his voice dangerously low, turning slowly toward his fiancée. "You said it into that microphone ten minutes ago."

Vivien’s lips parted, but no sound came out. She backed away a step, her eyes wide with terror as she realized the trap she had walked into. "Nathaniel... I... I can explain..."
"Did you burn this?" Nathaniel asked, pointing a trembling finger at the ruined silver elephant. "DID YOU?!"
