Chapter 10 - The Promise

That evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon in a blaze of purple and gold, Lily and I walked down to the shoreline.

The gentle waves lapped at our bare feet, washing over the cool sand. Lily held my hand tightly with both of hers, her eyes wide as she looked out over the vast, peaceful water.

"Mama?" she asked softly.

"Yes, baby?"

"Is the giant ship gone forever?"

I knelt down in the sand so I was at eye level with her. I brushed a stray hair from her forehead, looking into the eyes that carried so much innocence, resilience, and hope.

"The giant ship is gone, sweetie," I said, kissing both her cheeks. "And no one will ever take Mommy away from you again. No more locks. No more secrets. Just you, me, and Barnaby."

Lily threw her arms around my neck, resting her head against my shoulder. The ocean breeze blew softly around us, carrying the clean, fresh scent of salt water.

"I love you, Mama."

"I love you more than the whole wide world, Lily."

I lifted her up into my arms and turned back toward our warm, illuminated home on the bluff. The lights were glowing brightly in the windows, casting a warm path across the lawn.

We had survived the storm. We had broken the chains. And as we walked through our front door together, I knew that for the first time in our lives, we were finally home.
